Josh Norman promises he won't hold out...

If that's what he wants then I hope he gets it, somewhere other than Carolina. But I DO NOT want to hear one person EVER say anything about it being time for Norman to get a ring etc. etc. You have 2-3 options (depending on good fortunes) for how to build your career/legacy. 1) Chasing $$$ 2). Chasing success. 3). Loyalty. You may get lucky and get 2 of these 3 but you aren't going to get all 3 unless you are the luckiest SOB ever. That being said, When it comes to the end of a guys career, some chased the almighty $$dollar$$ and some either chased rings looking to play for successful franchises or stayed loyal to their squad no matter what. Those last two are the group I feel for and want to see ride off with rings and glory. The guys who chase the goals within the game itself and see themselves as a part of the fabric of the history of the game. The ones who chase money are fun to watch but I feel no sympathy for them if they don't achieve any bucket list items or have bad luck. It's all about them and nothing else matters.

And yes, for the smart @$$ that will always get on and quote money figures, in the shoes of 80-90% of the players in the league, I would factor in my chances of winning and staying loyal to a team i cared for over the amount of money. This generation has been greedy and forgotten what it is like to NOT chase $$ and to focus on a legacy instead. I am not sure if I would chose the loyal route or picking successful franchises route (when possible) but I'd take a steep discount from either to be apart of something special. At the end of the day, if you are a success and smart in this league you'll leave with millions of dollars regardless. My kids and grandkids can hold a championship ring, they can't hold my paycheck. As long as I have a way to make sure they are provided for (and guys like Josh CERTAINLY DO) I'd rather find glory than a few extra $$ that I can't take with me when im dead anyways.

I think Cam and Luke got all 3 if you ask me.

Norman is crazy, but I like his crazy.

That said, 2016 or 2017 will be the end of his time as a Panther I'd think. Franchised this year, and even the next potentially...and if he's still playing at a high level then, a Jaguars or Browns will overpay him while Gettleman will sit back and collect a comp pick.

The tag becomes 120% if we were to retag him next year, adding the rise in cap and a second year franchise cost us around 17 million dollars, I'm sorry but that is just too much to pay ANYONE on this team besides Cam or KK.

I didn't take the hometown discount as saying he wants the #1 salary amongst CBs.  I took it more as he wasn't going to give a hometown discount just because he was a lifelong Carolina man.

I hope DG gets a deal done.   But if I am DG I will tag him again in 2017.  Windows don't stay open forever  if he can't get a deal done now than focus on Short and Star and Tag Norman again in 2017.

Let's face it, the amount that is in question probably between what he wants and what he can get from us is a couple of million a year. It doesn't sound like much when we talk about the numbers on here, but if you really think about it, it's a huge amount of real, tangible money.

What they are disagreeing over, and the difference he might make by going somewhere else, is more than most of us would make in a decade, perhaps in a lifetime. Just the amount of money a "hometown discount" would cut a player is more than any of us are likely to ever put away in a lifetime for retirement. More than.

We talk about these salaries, but honestly, the amount of money is so far out of our conceptual range that it just isn't fully conceivable.

Everyone is always so obsessed with being the highest paid. Hell Steph ain't in the top ten, or maybe even top 20 or 30 in paid players in the NBA while being the best player.

Yet he makes so much money in endorsements. You don't have to sign for pennies Josh, but let your ego go and take a fair contract and give your team a chance to be great for years.

We all take home-town discounts all the time and value location for our jobs over increases in pay.  I'm not sure why athletes seem so opposed to it.

the difference in pay scale makes travel much less of an obstacle

someone in josh norman's position could just fly home to charlotte whenever he wanted to.  that's what steve smith was doing in 2014.

I get the feeling that if he has another years like this past year while playing under the franchise tag, then Gettleman will pay him. I still think they can work out a deal this year, but if not then he plays under the tag. And if he balls out, and plays the same way, then I personally think that he will get his money in Carolina. If he drops off, then he may stay for lesser money. that is just my gut feeling.

He won't get the money he is looking for here.  He's too old and Getts will let him walk.  He will play in Carolina this year and be let go. He is also a product of this system and will not be as good someplace where he is not part of a puzzle that a smart coaching staff puts together. One thing Rivera is good at is situational player football. Josh is not an all time great.  He's had 1.5 very good years.  Dude is delusional. I wish him luck making his money, but it won't be here.

I don't get ppl dogging Josh on this. Dude was a walk on at coastal Carolina, a 5th round pick. Goes from a starter to in the doghouse for a year to an all-pro top 3 player at his position. The guy has literally had to claw and fight his way to the top. And on top of all that, he said he wouldn't hold out with the tag. What more can we really ask of Josh? Hes taking a major risk losing out on possibly 15-25 million guaranteed money if he has a career ending injury this year. That's always a possibility. He said he won't hold out because he loves and respects his teammates and coaches. He is great and very open with fans. He's been a classy guy for this organization.

This is his only chance at dream guaranteed money that can set up his family for life. I do not blame him one bit.

so you're saying the offer Getts has made to him wouldn't be considered "dream guaranteed" money?

none of it has been made public, at least to my knowledge, but i'm guessing he was offered somewhere in the realm of a 4 year, $45-50M deal with $20-25M guaranteed. At 28 years old, I'd take that deal. There's no guarantees in this business, and like MountainHeel said, Josh loves media exposure, he loves the limelight, and unfortunately taking more money for a team of irrelevancy won't give him the satisfaction he desires.

Like you said nothing's been made public, so this is all make believe to a certain extent.

But I get the feeling that the sticking point is the length of the contract as much as the money.

I think JNo wants top (not necessarily top 5) CB money and a 4 - 5 year deal. I'm not so sure Getts is willing to sign more than a 2 - 3 year deal at top money without some easy to get away from years after that which JNo wouldn't like.

Because they think they are better than us.

why the fug is everyone here acting like he's gone after this year. If he balls out again this year, which he will because he is great, he will get his money with this team. In this league its all about winning super bowls and nothing else matters. norman will be a huge factor for us winning bowl's and without him we'd be taking a big step backwards and gettleman knows that.

Do you actually believe Gman will give a 29 yr old CB a 4-5yr contract 14/15m per year next season? This isn't I'm dig in just curious.....and God knows what other teams like Oakland and Jacksonville will be offering....and don't forget Short and Star will need new deals on top of that, sorry to say but if a deal isn't worked out before next season it is more than likely JNo walks. If this was a Hurney regime JNo would be locked down by now but Gman hasn't shown he is that type of GM.
