Three-time Super Bowl champion Shannon Sharpe was also reading the Masters backlash online, and the comparisons between Spieth and Newton left him completely baffled.

“I’ve been following sports for a long time, but I’ve never seen anything like this, I never have,” the Pro Football Hall of Famer said Monday in a phone interview with The Post.

Quote

“I’m thinking they’ll draw parallels to” Norman’s collapse, Sharpe continued. “I never saw Cam Newton come into the equation. And that just goes to show you that two minutes after the tournament’s over, that people are talking about Cam Newton!

Quote

“They never say, ‘You know, [San Antonio Spurs Coach] Gregg Popovich could learn a lot about sideline interviews by listening to [Golden State Warriors Coach] Steve Kerr.’ You never hear that,” Sharpe added. “You never hear, ‘[New England Patriots] Coach [Bill] Belichick could have learned a lot, listening to how [former NFL coach] Tony Dungy and other coaches do interviews.’ Nobody says that. But with Cam, we’re not even talking about football, we’re talking about golf, and the last game has happened two months ago, and somehow he gets dragged into the equation. I just don’t understand how.”

Quote

On Sunday, in response to a critic of Newton, Sharpe tweeted that Peyton Manning walked directly off the field after his Indianapolis Colts lost Super Bowl XLIV, rather than sticking around to shake the hand of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees. By contrast, Newton took a moment to congratulate the victorious Manning at midfield after February’s championship game, even flashing his famous smile, a moment that might have been overlooked by his detractors.

Quote

But to Sharpe, the apparent animosity toward Newton feels personal, and he doesn’t think anything the quarterback does will sway either his supporters or his critics. “Look, I get it,” Sharpe said. “He didn’t handle the situation well. But you’re talking about something that’s two months removed. Cam Newton is off the radar.

“We’re talking about free agency, the draft is, what, two months away? People are talking about that,” he continued. “And people are going back two months. Not two days, not two hours — two months. Think about where your mind is, if something happens and the first thing you think about is something that happened two months ago.”

Quote

Still, though, is there anything to the notion that Newton could learn something from Spieth’s comportment after the Masters?

“What could he learn?” Sharpe wondered. “He could do interviews like Coach Belichick. [In a monotone voice:] ‘Yeah. We’re on to Cincinnati.’ Or he could do an interview like Marshawn Lynch — ‘I’m just here so I don’t get fined.'”

To Sharpe, Newton’s behavior after the Super Bowl is a reflection of his emotional personality, and that personality is nothing but a good thing for the NFL.

There's more to it, but I think I hit the highlights.

Nothing new, but it's about time people outside of our fanbase - people with a media presence at that - finally started speaking on it.  This kinda poo has been happening since we drafted him.

People love them some Cam.  Whether it's love to hate him or love to root for him... ain't much of an inbetween when it comes to him.

Hot topic and conversation wise he's the LeBron James of the NFL

Here's something to learn, don't care what Internet says.  Definitely don't care what the media says.  It all rolls.  Sharpe's comments about . . .

Reading this thread gave me this exact thought/reaction.

As much as I'd love for Cam to be a National Media Darling...that's what he is locally and we know what we've got...the defending NFL-MVP Mega-Star.

When it's all said and done Cam may just go down as the greatest player to ever do it. People have never seen anything like him, good or bad...you can't compare him to LeBron or anybody else. I've never seen anyone discussed like he is. Its Cam Newton - and everybody else...and I think that exactly what he was going for.

I fuging love it.

Great article!

Folks love Cam the Winner who celebrates, dabs and gives football to kids.  They hate the pouty Cam who hates losing or putting a towel on his head.

Cam will never do enough in their eyes because he's so emotional.  It's funny bringing up the Pats because they are the "model" NFL franchise with fairly poor sportsmanship, several cheating allegations, but with the wins to gloss it all over.

Let's win a Super Bowl next year.  Then no one will care about Cam's negative.

Commodus - "If they don't respect me, how can they love me"

Cam will never go down at the GOAT because of the detractors (which number greatly) continue to tarnish his reputation at every turn.  He can win 3 more MVP's and 2 Superbowl Rings, and you will have a large part of the masses mention "$cam stole a laptop".  Cam deserves better, but as long as his approval rate remains in the 50th percentile, he will never get Peyton-Like accolades.

The reasons...a different thread.

Definitely agree with Shannon. The way some people continue to talk about Cam you would think no other sports star has been curt with the media or opponents after a loss. It's like a weird mix of racial and personality hate that's fueling this thing to go on far longer than it should.

    • I feel like this trade just lives rent free in people's heads and keeps morphing into different things. First thing is that the rumored trade was for future firsts. They wouldn't have any extra picks in 2023; the firsts would have been for 2024 and 2025. With very few exceptions, NFL GMs don't value picks that far away. You have to have a lot of job security to pull that off. Like Chiefs, Eagles, Rams kinda stability. That's obviously not the case with David Tepper, especially since he'd just fired his head coach. No GM except for like Howie Roseman is going to trade an asset you have now for a future asset you probably get to use.  Second, at the time you'd have to assume these are first rounders late in the first round. Obviously currency is currency and the panthers need young players, but these weren't slam dunk top ten picks. At the end of the day there's one pick that separates a first and second round pick.  Lastly, the only place that ever reported this trade was the Rams. All the reporters just repeated what McVay said and it became gospel. We have no idea how serious the negotiations were, if they ever really happened, if the offer was real, etc. And I personally believe McVay and Sneed are the kind of guys who would make up rumors like that to fug up other teams, mostly because I assume if I've thought of it someone smarter than me has.  I don't know how you'd call it the greatest draft haul of all time. Firsts quickly lose their value the farther out they are and Burns had 16.5 sacks last season. And anyway those picks would probably just been tossed into the burning inferno of the Bryce trade up so it's a moot point anyway.
