Pretty much.  I think it's typically used for jaguars/leopards that are black.

I think the Florida panther is just a glorified name for the mountain lion/puma/cougar/whatever other names it has.

Yeah, I'm not really sure what exactly is correct for calling something a panther. I think all big cats are in the genus panthera so you can probably get away with calling any of them a panther.
