I'm told part of the reason the Carolina Panthers removed the franchise tag from Josh Norman, which allowed him to enter the free agent market, is due to the fact the team did not want to sign a 28-year-old cornerback to a big-money long-term contract, which included guarantees into his 30s. Norman will turn 29 years old this coming December.

I have been informed the Panthers like Southeastern Louisiana cornerback Harlan Miller and will consider him as the third round closes out. The team had two defensive back coaches working out Miller.

Analysis

Strengths

Plays with quick, darting feet and has the ability to mirror and match receivers' movements down the field. Is always in hot pursuit in run support and is willing to sprint across the field to get into the action. Tenacious wrap-up tackler. Tall with good arm length. Will actively look for chances to make plays outside his area. In press, reads direction of release and slides feet in front of receiver to impede his route. Able to shift weight and change direction instantly. Hard-charging competitor with ball skills to boot.

Weaknesses

Thin and scouts question whether or not he can carry much more weight. Aggressiveness can get him in trouble. Will get caught peeking into backfield at play-action and allow his man to get a jump on him from time to time. The footwork is there, but needs to improve angles to the ball to make more plays. Slow 40 time and overall disappointing combine likely to ding his draft stock.

NFL Comparison

Kevin Johnson

Bottom Line

With his abundance of energy and tenacious playing style, it's hard not to love watching Harlan Miller play. While Miller is a willing tackler and shows the feet to mirror and match in space, his poor speed and quickness testing at the NFL Scouting Combine raises serious questions when combined with his thin frame. Miller's strong week at the Senior Bowl will work in his favor, but he might be a good third cornerback rather than a full-time starter.

Didn't Gman offer $11 mil x 4 yrs.  That's big money long term.  Go to DC with that un-named source bull.  Good luck Josh, but dag I wanted you to stay.

I read this and thought this was about Norman, pretty much describes him.

Well as I posted in my mock draft a couple of weeks ago, we had a private visit with Miller, went out to dinner with him, etc. So there's clear interest. I do be believe that we trade up into the third as soon as it appears any kind of threat is possible.

Dinner and a movie afterwards. very romantic

    • Damn I liked A'Shawn too. This is basically a heads up we're planning on cutting you move.  Robinson wasn't the best but I loved his attitude and effort on the field. He held that entire dline together when Brown went down iirc..granted we finished that season as the worst rushing defense in modern NFL history.  If Wharton would have performed up to atleast half of his salary last season, I'd feel a little better about it. We do need that cap space though.
    • 13. Carolina is coming. The Panthers are well thought of around the league. Their "process" seems sound. I think their off-season will be very interesting to keep an eye on. They made the playoffs, but they're not yet knocking on the door. (Offense was 26th in EPA/play.) I think it's imperative they don't overestimate where they are in their build. They can't throw a ton of money around in FA to "make a run now". They need to be intentional about building a solid foundation. (IMO) And from what I know about the team... I think they will be. Sidenote: I have my eye on offense there, not defense. They HAVE to leave next season with a strong opinion on Bryce Young. They need to put pieces around him to do that. Can't be left wondering what he would have looked like with "better OL play" or "more pass catchers". They have to know. (That part is purely my opinion. No one told me that.) https://x.com/lindsay_rhodes/status/2027212533417869499?s=46&t=xeIgh_-Vr2aKxBkBJdfnKA
    • Because this DL is completely reliant on Brown being available and being a stud. Without him we were the worst D in history. The Wharton signing last year reeked of desperation. He just isn't a great fit for us schematically and I think we panicked a little bit when we missed out on Milton Williams who would have been a great fit.
