James Bradberry vs Keyarris Garrett Rookie Camp

Jeremy Igo

One of the more interesting matchups of Carolina Panthers rookie camp was corner James Bradberry vs receiver Keyarris Garrett.

Second round pick vs UDFA.

Here is a three frame look from one play in particular I found interesting.

Garrett breaks free on a comeback route. Bradberry quickly closes in and is in Garrett's hip pocket. Notice Bradberry's hand on the football and the football only. This really is a solid play by Bradberry.

However, Garrett is able to maintain control of the ball and bring it into his body. Strong hands this kid has. Might have to do with why he led the nation in receiving last year.

When it was over Garrett still had the ball in hand as he checked out his leg that may have been nicked on the play (he was fine).

Bradberry had a look on his face that says he knows it was a good play on his part, just happened to be a better receiving play.

A decent play by a second round pick, but an even more impressive play for the undrafted free agent with something to prove.

Read into this what you will.

Nice.

I know it's WAY early, but I'm reading into it that our excitement about Garrett as a "free draft pick" (Ricky Proehl's words) may not be unfounded.  This guy may well be one of the steals of the draft.  Really intense WR battle ahead in camp.

And Bradberry looks like he's got promise as well.

Funchess was on the sidelines yesterday just hanging out and asked the same question.

Can't even imagine what it's like being on the practice field with these guys let alone a game field. Very envious of you Mr. Igo and thank you for the coverage you bring us Huddlers.

So, meaning that Gman did it once again? Should I go buy my 24 jersey?

I know you are being a bit facetious but I'd hold off on that. non-zero chance Teddy Williams doesn't make the squad and Bradberry might take 21 when he's gone.

I'm confused on why Garrett didn't get drafted. He seems like a stud.

Just about everyone is miffed about why Garrett wasn't drafted.

At this point, I am hoping that people continue to ask that question for at least the next few years, if not his whole career. That would be quite the feather in Gettleman's cap.

I'm so psyched about Garrett

Here's how I see WR unfolding:

KB, Funch, Ginn, Brown

Those 4 are locks, thinking we keep 6 WRs

Bersin, Garrett, Byrd, Hill, and Norwood are all competing for those two spots

My best guess is: Byrd goes back to practice squad, Bersin gets cut (nothing against Bersin), and Hill, Garrett and Norwood have a blood bath battle for the last two roster spots

Don't think we take the chance of losing Garrett by putting him on PS and I think one of Norwood or Hill will shine during camp (Panthers have invested in both players and I don't suspect us wanting to lose one)

Either way you slice it or dice it, this could be the best WR corps the Panthers have EVER had.

    • You don't have to go through every game and point it out as we are discussing his GWDs. You specifically called out that he had GWDs because he is the reason the team is always playing from behind. We looked at those eight games and only Miami stands out as one where he put the team in a hole to begin with. You've added the Atlanta game where the team didn't score a TD but only kicked field goals. You're not trying to change what we're discussing to fit your feelings re: Bryce. That's not necessary. We are discussing GWDs per the thread topic. We have also shown that your opinion that the team has had to always come back due to Bryce was proven to be false as was the claim that "minus one game" was his fault. Appealing to emotion afterwards by trying to broadly paint the rest of the losses in the same way just doesn't work. Where in the Hell did you get that the entire point is the suggestion that BY is more clutch than Jake and/or Cam? It's giving something to be positive about in that Bryce has shown the ability to comeback and win games despite the calamity that might have taken place to put them behind to begin with. How is that blasphemy?
    • His run blocking is making up for his negatives in pass blocking right now.  He’ll still have pass blocking hiccups, but if they think he’s a critical part to the locker room and team construction, you probably re-sign him and try not to overpay.
    • Callahan is gone McDaniel and Taylor are happening Stefanski is a growing possibility. I mean, they need to get an offense going eventually.  Could see Morris as a surprise one.
