Proehl talks about Damiere Byrd

He's going to be someone to reckon with

That could just be coachspeak, of course. But Proehl doesn't tend to wax poetic when it's not warranted. Besides telling Byrd he needed to bulk up, Proehl preached about attacking the ball better.

On Friday and Saturday, at least, Byrd did.

"It's crazy what a difference one year makes," he says. "Being out here for a second year, it really kind of puts the veteran role on us."

"He assumed a leadership role out here, which was really neat to see," Rivera says. "Very rarely do you see a wide receiver step up like that, but he did a nice job."

While this weekend was a boost for Byrd, he's still on the outside looking in for a spot on the Panthers' 53-man roster. He'll head into OTAs behind Kelvin Benjamin, Devin Funchess, Ted Ginn Jr. and Philly Brown. With Brenton Bersin,Stephen Hill, Kevin Norwood and Garrett also in the mix, the numbers aren't in Byrd's favor.

"If you get caught up in the numbers game, it's never gonna go in your favor," he counters. "You never know what's going to happen. You never know how the numbers will shift. You never know how many we're going to take into the season.

The inevitable consequence of building a good team is that there are always players you want to keep but can't find room for because someone else is just a little better or a slightly better fit.

We should probably get used to that.

It's really his spot to earn. Right now, I don't see where Norwood and Hill retain spots and we might see the end of Bersin's time here, too. Byrd and Garrett, however, look like replacements for folks we've either got or have recently released.

Bold prediction,  Byrd makes the team over Ginn.

I never would have thought this was possible until the moves made at CB this off-season.  IMO, CB and WR are analogous in a lot of ways, and Gettleman has shown a tendency for youth and speed.

Unless he can show some serious gains in the punt return department, his roster battle won't be with Ginn.

I don't know about that. Ginn's still fast and is a legit return guy. If Byrd's gonna bump a similar type/size WR, I'd think it would be Brown.

The WR position battle may be the most interesting of the preseason.

Slightly less bolder prediction....Damiere Byrd makes the roster over Corey "Philly" Brown. I also say that Garett makes the roster over Bersin.

This has the highest probability to happen.

Based on who we have right now the WRs I'd like to see on our 53 are KB, Funchess, Ginn, Garrett and either Byrd or Brown. I dunno enough yet about Byrd to go so far as to say he takes Brown's spot, but what I do know is that Brown is brittle, yet relatively productive for a WR4/5 when he is healthy. I'd LIKE to see Byrd take his spot because he's improved enough to do so because I don't think Brown will ever be tough enough to play a full 19 game season.
