almost enough to make you feel sorry for taint fans.....

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/05/26/drew-brees-applies-deadline-to-his-talks-with-saints-on-a-new-deal/

Brees said Wednesday, via theAssociated Press. “If you remember in 2011, where it began to drag into the season, three weeks in I was like, ‘I don’t want to deal with it anymore. I want to focus on football, focus on the season.’ That has always been my approach. That’ll be my approach again. There’s a deal to be done now, and if it doesn’t get done now, it’ll be a different deal to get done at the end of the year.”

That’s the closest Brees or his agent have come to pointing out the reality that, if the Saints allow Brees to play out the final year of his five-year, $100 million contract, the circumstances will change, dramatically. They’ll change thanks to the arbitration claim filed by Brees after the Saints applied the franchise tag to him in 2012, which resulted in a ruling that the next application of the tag to Brees will be the third of his career. As a result, he’ll be entitled to a 44-percent increase over his cap number from 2016.

That’s $43.2 million. For one year. For a quarterback who will be 38 in January.

The thread title reflects poorly on Brees, but I don't see how any of this is Drew's fault. It's a huge indictment on New Orleans management.

Brees probably wants to finish his career in New Orleans and expected to be treated to negotiations fitting for a franchise QB that literally saved the franchise from moving. I would be frustrated if I was Brees and I kept being treated as less and less of a priority.

Saints should have gotten a sensible extension done to lower his cap number or released him. Instead, they tried to keep putting off taking care of their QB in favor of spending elsewhere to make a SB run and now they've run out of time.

It's always a matter of time when you draft poorly, and overspend in free agency.

Agreed.  Brees is consistently an elite Qb, and deserves to bank everything he can. It's not his faultthat the taints FO has the fiscal responsibility of a 16 year old with daddy's platinum card.

Usually in a clusterpluck like this there is more than enough blame to go around.  A ton of taint fans are getting tired of Brees and his contract demands.  Personally, I love it.  Funny how public sentiment will change over time.  At first, in 2011 all the taint fans wanted the mole to get paid.  Now that the Bree's contract has been a Damocles Sword for the taints for the last few years public sentiment is moving toward management.  Waiting for the sword to fall is entertaining to say the least.

"Brees will make $20 million in 2016, but the Saints are on the hook for another $10 in previously paid bonuses, making his cap charge a league-high $30 million."

Unfortunately for the Saints, Brees thinks he can be an elite QB for years to come.

"I feel like there's nothing I can't do now that I couldn't do 10, 15 years ago," Brees said. "As long as I'm having fun, can stay healthy, and can play at a high level, I'm going to play as long as I can."  http://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/2016/02/drew_brees_contract_extension_1.html

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
