Olsen and Gronk racing to set NFL record

Recommended Posts

There has never been a Tight End to reach the 1,000 yard mark in three consecutive seasons.  Both Olsen and Gronk have a chance at doing it this year.  Now, the race is on to see who gets there first.  I know Olsen was barely over the line the last two seasons, but I'm hoping he can pull it off.  Would be awesome if he beats Gronk to it as well.  You can see what Olsen has to say about it here: http://www.panthers.com/news/article-2/Olsen-determined-to-make-history/9934bb8e-09e7-4733-9124-135398567213

So, what say you Huddlers?  Can Greg do it and can he get there before Gronk does?

Good question. With Brady out the 1st 4 games, Greg has a shot to get the jump on Gronk. I have a feeling with KB back the doubles will be less on Olsen and therefore he could actually get more opportunities...as crazy as that sounds.

Yea, and you can add in the fact that Gronk tends to have a history of getting injured.  I definitely think Olsen could get there first, but he'd have to have a hell of a first half of the season.  He is Cam's security blanket, so you never know.

The only reason Gronk hasn't done it yet is injuries. And it's very possible he never does it because of injuries. Olsen has been rock solid and steady the past few seasons and will likely continue to be this year. My money would be on Greg getting it first and possibly only him getting it but as has been mentioned with KB back, Funch getting better, etc. it's very possible neither of them get 1,000 this year. If Gronk avoids injuries he'll get it, but that's 50/50 for him, at best.

Hard to imagine that Gonzo and Gates never got there...both were close a couple times, and just couldn't get over the hump.

Gonzo got 3130 over a 3 year period, and Gates got 2989....kinda wild.

Also, side note, Gonzo played 17 seasons, and played 16 games 15 times out of 17, with the other two years being 15 games played.

Also wild to look at, Gates has played 80 fewer games than Gonzo did to date, and is only 7 TD's behind him.

With Benjamin back, and Funchess coming into his own, I have a hard time seeing Olsen reach the 1000 yard mark again.  I think there just wont be as many targets to go around.

So Olsen will get the same number of targets that he usually gets while those will get less. Greg had 1,000 yards with Benji, I doubt his targets will reduce this season. The offense remains the same, different guys are plugged in,

If anything I think 4 games w/o Brady will lead to more yards for Gronk since he will be Garoppolo's safety valve receiver

    • We don't have to tear down Dak to appreciate what Bryce did yesterday. Dak had 0 running game. If the cowboys were better, he'd be a legit MVP candidate if he keeps playing this way.  They did it with Ceedee last year, but they do a better job of anybody we play consistently of getting their best receiver off Jaycee.  Bryce was good too. If we just catch the ball that was intercepted, we probably win by 7+, and Bryce goes over 200 yards passing.  Biggest shift the last few weeks has been play calling. I thought Canales abandoned the run game way to early at times last year. This year he really seems to be sticking with it.  I still think Chuba is better at making 4 yards when there's nothing there, but Rico is better at making 30 yards when there's 6 there. I like the direction. Hopefully we can get Moton, Sanders and Coker back and really be dangerous. Our play action game is pretty deadly right now.  Unrelated: My favorite quality about Bryce right now is his ability to see the defensive hold and throw the ball there. He EXPOSES the officials when they don't call it. That one on Tetaroia yesterday late in the game was a bad miss on their part.
    • That sacks allowed number lookin juicy!
    • This is a game the Panthers should win... just the sort of game they lose. The Panthers have a bad habit that goes back years of playing down to the competition's level only to mess around and lose the game. The Jets game should be taken very seriously! But I want to enjoy the fact that they beat the Cowboys for at least another day or so!
