  1. 1. If preseason were one game, which receiver would you have on the roster?

    • Brenton Bersin

    • Damiere Byrd
      73

I'm officially on the Damiere Byrd train. (I mean I have been for awhile) Bersin has proven himself as a reliable contributor. He has great hands and has a chemistry with Cam and DA. To people that say Bersin sucks... you're a hater.

But Damiere Byrd's speed in the return game is special enough to give him a spot on this roster. I'd still keep Ted Ginn as a punt returner, but in the kickoff.... his speed can literally swing the momentum of a game in one play. Field position is a huge part of this game, and giving our offense great field position means points.

Bersin is a hometown hero and I think he's great insurance in the instance that a receiver gets hurt. But Damiere Byrd has the type of playmaking ability that can change a game in a very short time. I don't think that his dropped punt last night drops his status. He literally had 113 yards of productivity last night and the coaches seem to really like him.  I really hope we find a way to keep them both.

How likely is it that we carry 6 receivers?  Whose the odd man out?

Bersin is a known quantity.  Byrd hasn't been consistent enough.  We're too risk averse IMHO to release Bersin and keep Byrd on who may flounder in games.  We know what Bersin can do, and he fits a very important niche.  Byrd has speed but that's all we really know, and he didn't do anything in PS1 to supplant Bersin.  It's kind of funny that Bersin had the better game, yet everyone wants to keep Byrd.

Well, not saying that Cam would vote for one or the other, but he did say this about Byrd:

“When he’s confident, he’s as good as, if not one of, our top tier guys. He’s very shifty, he’s fast and when he gets in that mentality that no one can cover him, then he can be an asset for us.”

That's high praise coming from the team QB and reigning league MVP

I've got to side with Bersin. Clutch slot receiver > kick-off return specialist.

Too many kicks go into and out of the endzone anymore to invest big time in someone to catch it and take a knee 90% of the time.

A guy that can make a tough catch in heavy traffic on third down consistently... there's always room for that guy.

I feel we might run with 6 WR's again this season. If Byrd proves his worth as a game changing PR/KR, and Bersin keeps his reliability and stability, I think it'd be really hard for the coaching staff to cut any one of them. Ginn, Funchess, Philly, and Benji are all locks from the looks of things. Bersin and Byrd are the other two I'm hoping make it.

    • If we get to 4-3 do we make a sneaky trade?
    • Corbett should move back to guard if anything while being the backup for BC and Lewis. Cade needs to stay at center. That much has been obvious since last year.  Coker needs to be fast tracked to the lineup, preferably starting over XL.  The problem comes with Chubba, JT and Turk... 3 starters that the backups have arguably outperformed. I like JT's ball skills but I'm quickly becoming an Evans fan. Hopefully JT coming back will only affect James Mitchell. Idunno but Rico should be untouchable at the moment...he's on OPTY/MVP pace and Turk should NEVER be utilized as a NT again.
    • Looking at the TE situation, does Sanders get on the field if he can't block to the level of TT and ME?  I am 100% on board with Sanders getting Wally Pipped on this one.  We have plenty of WR's, I don't see what huge advantage he gives us over TT or ME, or even James Mitchel at this point.  Canales said when he was hired that the TE was a huge part of his offense.  The blocking displayed by the TE room Sunday was exactly what he meant. I also think the WR rotation ends up being....  TMAC, Coaker, Brycen, XL, Horn, Renfrow.  XL needs to learn to run routes, block his ass off, and be dependable if he wants to get opportunities going forward.  He's about to lose the Trust of BY.  Looking at the top 3 Wr's, I easily see JHJr passing him on the depth chart.  My money is on Renfrow being inactive most games going forward.
