Observations From PS WK2

*The first and most obvious one was Worley.  Man, that was tough to watch.  As i mentioned in the "Worley unimpressed" thread, the first thing I thought of when watching was Norman's early years, mainly because of comparisons based off of measurables since the draft...  but, I couldn't bring myself to compare him to JNo.  I can see it, and have seen it in all gameplay I've seen from Bradberry and some of the same positive traits in Sanchez.  Worley has been the constant mystery for me out of all our baby backs...  and today looked horrible.  Maybe it is just one game and a one-off, bad performance.  But, as i said elsewhere, to me it doesn't appear to be system-related with him to me.  He didn't seem to have good position, outside of one catch walker made.  He seems stiff and slow to react.  Maybe technique and continued reps will help, but that looked just about as bad as you could imagine.  At the end of the day, it was one game, but compared to his peers, he hasn't seemed to impress as much as they have to this point either.  I wonder if the top 3 corners end up being Bradberry, Bene, and Sanchez...

*Speaking of Bene and Sanchez - great bounce back for both of these guys.  A great play of redemption of sorts for Bene following some reported rough moments in camp and as far as Sanchez, great play on a ball following that blown coverage on the corner route TD earlier.  I also really loved Sanchez getting in there and mixing it up and finishing around the ball where he could.  I know sonce camp started the big concern was Sanchez's ability to tackle, and he showed no hesitation in getting in there today.  Bene and Sanchez's stock are on the rise.

*Teddy Ginn...  what more to say.  Still doesn't get enough respect or his just due as a reciever.  His ability to separate from the pack is otherworldly and a beautiful thing to watch.  He is a beast and deserves more appreciation than he gets.  I love this guy!  Keep doing work, Teddy!

*Damiere Byrd...  this guy, in my mind, is an absolute lock to make the team and contribute this year.  His versatility is invaluable and he looks absolutely explosive.  One thing that stood out to me, that i know the staff has spoke about with other players in the past, was that Byrd lined up at every reciever position on the field at different points of the game.  His work since last year shows in every aspect of the game...  he can play every reciever position, he can return kicks, he runs smooth routes and gets out of his breaks fast, he can beat the defense over the top, and it appears our team trusts him in toght windows for tough catches over the middle as well.  I can't express how impressed I am with him from last year to this year.  I know it's early, but I see potential to be an even better version of Philly.

*Donald Hawkins - I know Gradkowski was in there and Williams was back in at RT with the 2s, so the overall group was better, but Hawkins stood out.  There didnt seem to be much drop off from the 1s to the 2s today, and I think he played a big part in that.

*Anyone else notice Shaq barely playing with the 1s.  We've heard to look out for him playing a lot on the nickel this season, but curiously enough, today it seemed we were running nickel and dime predominantly with our 1s and I didn't see Shaq out there - instead it appeared to be all DB lineups.  I noticed Sanchez and Bene getting reps with the 1s before Shaq.  One play it even appeared we brought in extra corners and dropped Worley back to safety depth over the slot.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong because I had a lot going on during the game, but it looked like Shaq came in with Klein's unit for his most extended look along with the rest of the 2s.  I have no idea what this means, but found it interesting...  I know Shaq is super impressive thus far this season and I'm confident he's well on his way to being a beast, so my guess is that they just wanted the extra reps for the DBs and/or wanted to experiment with different combos of personnel and see how they mesh.

*Cam and the offense (especially the recievers)...  I can't wait to see them play an entire game.  This offense could be historically great.

We were really thin at safety.  Three went out with injuries, at least temporarily. (Colin Jones later returned)

Here's what BBR wrote about injuries:

  • S Travell Dixon left the game early in the first quarter after taking a shot to the chest while making a nice tackle on a kickoff.
  • S Trenton Robinson, who injured his shoulder in the second quarter while trying to make a tackle on a punt, will have an MRI on Sunday.
  • S Marcus Ball missed a couple plays early in the fourth quarter after something happened to his right knee. With the Panthers low on safeties, CB Daryl Worley jumped back there until Ball returned.

I agree and noticed everything you said. You beat me to the Ginn thing though. Spared everyone a Ginn thread. He's just too good to cut, even with his less than sure hands. He is an enigma, and his acceleration and transition into high gear is a beauty to see. Just when you think there's no way he can run past those guys, he does exactly that.

I'll take those "sometimes" hands......

No dean Marlowe either

I think Worley just had a bad game. He isn't destined to be a terrible player because he got picked on in his second game as a pro.

I don't think people are assuming he will be a "terrible player" in the longterm,  it's this season that some are worried about. Moreover, it's not like he was beaten by a wily veteran. Tajae Sharpe basically abused him. Now we have to wonder if that's going to be the blueprint for the opposition this year.

On an off note, from a fantasy perspective, now I have to wonder if Sharpe is really that good, or was he just in the perfect situation (going against a fellow rook) to make him look better than he actually is. In my fantasy league we have three WR spots, a WR/TE and WR/RB spot, so a person like Tajae Sharpe could make an impact.  ;)

What worries me is if we have two rookie starting CB's to start the season.  One you can roll coverage to and help in our.  Two rookies (and the rookie mistakes they WILL make), exposes too much of the field.  I would feel much better with Bradberry and a vet starting....either Bene or McClain.  Only thing about Bene is is he plays outside, that puts Sanchez in the slot....and I am just not sure he is ready for that.

no need for us to show the league what we're going to look like with TD, Luke and Shaq on the field at the same time.  Not to mention, this was a very important game for the young guys to show their stuff with some good players around them.

For the first time I was impressed with Cash, enough to think he might actually make the team.

    • Derrick Brown was one player I never called or even suggested was a bust . Dude was young and hadn't even hit his stride. It takes time to learn the position. The thing I appreciated about him is that he kept improving season after season. He got paid and keeps on going like the Energizer Bunny.
    • How many teams coddle their QB the way Bryce has been coddled? I have never seen any other team in the NFL EVER baby a QB the way that Bryce has been.  Bryce was named day 1 starter his first year. It was obvious he didnt deserve it. He wasnt ready as evidenced by the worst rookie year in NFL history.  So let's move to year 2. He's named starter again with no competition in TC and is benched 2 games later. We have the ghost of a backup in Dalton who is so bad he can only beat Vegas and let's remember, the only reason he lost his starting job was a car accident, not because Bryce actually beat him out in practice.  And year 3. We sign Dalton again, who already proved he couldn't be depended on to put an even remotely passable performance on the field, and bring back Jack Plummer, who was even worse than last year. It was obvious he was nothing more than a pretend body in an attempt to create an illusion of some type of attempt to find a backup.  Then we start again with garbage play again and Bryce gets benched with a phantom injury, and the ghost of the ghost of Dalton breaks his thumb on the first drive and craps the field all over again. If we had actually made an attempt to find a legitimate QB2, it's possible Bryce doesn't step on the field again. Bryce is not agood QB and if we had any other mediocre QB, our record would be the same or better.  Bryce is not entrenched. He's been placed, protected and sheltered from ever having to face a  real QB competition in TC. Richardson and Levis both were ass and both were benched and eventually replaced.  Do I expect Baker to face competition in camp? Sure. I expect Tampa to find the best QB2 they can at price that fits their cap and resources and system and get him up to speed. If he's better than Baker, and if he's better by a significant margin, that's best for the team. The ultimate goal is a Super Bowl. Bellichek was constantly getting QB2s with the GOAT as his starter. He knew the value and that was realized when Cassell led them to an 11-5 record as a backup.  You and I may think differently than the people that matter but I will say it again. If you're afraid to bring in a capable backup, especially after the debacle of last year. The starting role wasn't earned, it was given, and that's loser mentality.
    • I would have done the same thing.  LSU is a much better job than Ole Miss.  Plus the enormous contract and every advantage a college team can offer in terms of recruiting and facilities and tradition etc
