FTW: Rivera had the worst coaching moment of week 1

Every week "For the Win" picks the best and worst decisions made by NFL coaches.

They make a good point about "wasting a timeout to make sure he wasn't wasting a timeout".

After an obviously bad spot gifted the Broncos a first down, Rivera needed some time to think about whether he should throw the red flag. After all, you don’t want to make a hasty decision and waste a timeout on a bad challenge. So what did Rivera do? He wasted a timeout in order to give himself more time to make sure he wasn’t wasting a timeout. The Panthers ended up winning the challenge but were still down a timeout.

Of course, it came back to haunt Rivera and the Panthers. With no timeouts remaining on the final drive, Carolina had just enough time to get in range for a 50-yard field goal. Graham Gano missed it and the Panthers were 0-1.

To be fair, you can also waste a challenge if you jump too soon. Didn't work out well in this case, but it's not an open and shut dumbass move.

I'd say the entirety of the coaching decisions made by the Rams this week were worse than any one mistake made by Rivera.

Precisely why the decision was so bad.

I am still floored its been YEARS and we STILL struggle to get plays off in time before the play clock runs out.  We burn at least 2 a game on that crap.

Yeah that wasn't the only timeout wasted, just the most glaring one... clock management and play call timing were horrible.

TD called that Timeout. Rivera proofed for years now that he can not handle the clock and TO situations well.

Remember the TO call to grant the Aints a FG before halftime a few years ago?

Another bad, yet overlooked, decision IMO - punting on 4th and 1 from our 44 yard line on the opening drive of the 2nd half. We were up 17-7, and a TD making it a 3 possession game then could have stifled the comeback well before it began by forcing Denver to go to the pass and abandon the run. I was shocked Ron didn't go for it - plunge Cam through the line and he would have had it, no doubt in my mind.

It was Thomas Davis that called that timeout.  I think he knew Ron had to be talked into challenging it.

Rivera doesn't get to see the camera views we get, he has to rely on the review crew upstairs to let him know whether to throw the challenge, and they have to wait for video too. It's not as obvious as people think it is when to challenge.

We tend to struggle with timeouts in general. Always have
