Where did this guy go?

Mr. Scot

To be honest, when have we ever run an attacking style of defense for an entire game under Rivera?

Even last year, once we got a lead it was soft zones all the way. Corners playing up on their man was a rarity even at our best times.

What happened to that aggressive philosophy?

I'm not advocating his firing or anything of that sort, but when I remember how he introduced himself, it just doesn't match with the guy that we've seen coaching in the years since.

He's completely and utterly by-the-book and predictable.

He likes to claim that he "threw away the book" when he became Riverboat.  No, he didn't.  What happened at those times was that the flames were growing so large and hot around him, his copy of the book got burnt to a crisp, so he had to improvise to get the flames to go away.

After the flames went away?  He bought a new copy of the book.  And he's protected it close and dear to his bosom every since.

(P.S. The flames started getting a lil hotter again last night in the 2nd half.  So the Riverboat Signal was lighted and reflected off the clouds on 4th down and Riverboat came and saved the day.  Then, after that, Ron pushed Riverboat off the top of the building.)

All true.  Now it's even worse with the LB's having to drop back to help the corners, and our D line gets run through like a liquor store during a riot.

The CB's aren't "doing their job".  They need help and that is a big reason we suck monkey balls.  Last year the LB's could focus on making plays near the LOS because they trusted everyone behind them.

Rivera seemingly destroys all good will we've had for him every other season, and somehow manages to get it back.

Not sure if he's going to be able to get it back this year. Going to take an impressive win streak from here on out. Like maybe undefeated/one loss

We can't start every year slow, and for those of you thinking "But last year!" Calm down, we were the most amazing INT in panthers history from losing to Luke McCown.

Rivera is just an average coach.  I don't care he won a couple COTY awards, because when he faces the top coaches he always gets outcoached.   This is who he is.  He's the coach that settles for a FG unless of course his job is on the line.   He knows now with the extension, JR won't let him go most likely.

To defend him a bit though, Gettleman didn't exactly help him out with help, unless you count drafting three forgettable corners.

He may not admit it, but he jumped off Rivera's bandwagon early on.

You're probably remembering a few years back when I thought Rivera would be fired and we might take a look at Kubiak.

Knowing now that Kubiak is a dirty son of a b--ch, I'm glad that didn't happen, but yes I've been highly - and openly - critical of Ron for a while.

Zimmer was my guy.

I think Rivera is angered me the most. I understand injuries happen, players don't always execute, etc. But this team is been so undisciplined. That is a DIRECT reflection on Rivera. He seems to be lacking something this year. Just read his presser last night. He harped on the Ealy face mask saying he didn't grab it? Like dude, it doesn't matter. We should not have ever been in that position, there were so many others mistakes made. We are 1-4 and you have the audacity to blame the game on the refs?

See, I don't buy that. I think this is who he really was at the time.

But after slow starts the first few seasons, I wasn't seeing that same guy. He looked like he'd been defanged.

Somewhere along the way I just think he went too far in the direction of being a "players coach".

I'm starting to wonder if this organization just doesn't do that to coaches. Or maybe he was just that way to begin with. I think JR should not settle for less and he does sometimes.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
