Norv Turner Resigns

Why would you want him instead of Shula? He's basically the exact same. If you want to get rid of Shula then you don't want Norv. They run the exact same offense except Norv doesn't have the same rapport with Cam and the suite of running plays for him. This would be the most pointless change ever.

Now if you like Shula and leaves for somewhere else then he would be a good alternative but to fire Shula and hire Norv would be asinine.

Rivera and Turner are close friends from their days with the Chargers. Rivera considers Turner a mentor.

Rivera actually tried to bring Turner aboard back before he chose to go with the Vikings (I forget in what role).

Is there a role for him now? I'm guessing it'd have to be a consultant type thing. Don't really see it but anything is possible.

Man, a few weeks ago the Vikes looked ready to conquer the world. How quickly things change.

There is no evidence that I know of from Turner that he could run an offense designed for Cam. It might take him some time to develop that, where Shula is probably the most creative run caller in the league. His problem is getting away from those calls and making poor decisions like a 1st and goal on the 1 pass when the run has been working.

Norv knows how to call better play-action, power, zone, sweeps, stretch etc for the RBs. It would definitely help the run game become better and keep Cam from taking a lot of the punishment.

I'd really like to know the 'why' behind this.

It's totally out of left field.

Speculation is Zimmer is using him as the scapegoat for the offensive struggles and let him resign, instead of firing him, out respect. Or that Norv has some health issues.

    • yeah, now it's going to get awkward.  The team circles pay attention to all this stuff.  All the wives and girlfriends see the posts.  They all talk like everyone.  Football is just a normal world outside of the fact they play a game for lots of money.  Gossip travels. They know the Theilen's want out at this point.  Carolina is now the disappointed failed trade location.    So now AT takes sort of an inhouse hit in Carolina IMO
    • Ummm... The dude looked like he was about 180 pounds soaking wet with us (I don't care what his listed weight was/is) - he would have been destroyed in the run game even more than our current and past crappy ILBs. The problem is we primarily play 3-4 or nickel/dime - there is little room on the field for him because he isnt an edge LB blitzer and he can't cover for crap. The only thing he can do kind of well is be an in-the-box safety that can try and beat blockers to the spot because of his athleticism. Washington was able to make him work last year because they used him solely as an in-the-box safety and almost exclusively ran a single high FS. The funny thing is they had good yards/game stats against the pass despite most of their secondary having embarrassingly low PFF grades. Washington was also terrible against the run, which might explain why they gave up so few yards passing.
    • Just get the deal done. We've teased it so much that the Thielen's expect it. Now we run the risk of our veteran WR locker room presence becoming disgruntled. Just take what we can get, make him happy, and get future assets while freeing up snaps for guys who will be here beyond this season.
