Some troublesome stats

Our points scored in the first half of games this season: 

132

Opponents points scored in the first half of games this season:
85 (This stat gets even better when you take out the 24 point blowup against NO)

Now, this looks great right? It seems like we should be winning the majority of the games, then comes the second half stats.

 

Our points scored in the second half of games this season:

100

Opponents points scored in the second half of games this season:
161

This is pretty bad, and it seems to be a common trend even going back to our 15-1 and 7-8-1 season. Why are our second halves so terrible? Rivera, Shula, just the players?

Ron takes a couple crayons away from Shula in the second half of games and we suffer because of it.

I know I sound like a broken record, but this coaching staff just doesn't believe in 2nd half adjustments. They work all week on a gameplan and run it no matter what come Sunday. That's why I feel this coaching staff will never win us a superbowl. Yes, we almost did last year, but we saw just how inept they were when they were too damn stubborn to change up the gameplan in the biggest game of the year. To consistently be a winning team year in and year out, you have got to have a coaching staff willing to make adjustments on the fly and tweak the gameplan if it isn't working.

Not only that, but Rivera's bitchass strategy of sitting on leads has pissed me off ever since he got here. We thought he turned the corner when his ass was about to get canned, but he has reverted back to his old ways.

Now if the Defense continues to improve, our first half scoring could still win us some games.

 

Wow, even as optimistic as I am, and that still scares me. Not the numbers themselves, cuz they kinda stink. But the Offense as a whole. This whole year has been a mess Offensively. Never saw the Offense playing this badly this year, not for nothing.

Every single time. Every single time we get a lead going into the second half, we go into low-risk offense and defense. Maybe that wins you some games, but it's apparent that it loses you a lot too.

Im not sure what is worse.  Watching them tie cams hands behind his back or watching the corners play 15 yards off the wideouts.

Its painfull.  This sunday with no luke we must go for it all the entire game.

Sometimes I think the sitting on a lead accusations are a little overboard.  If you look at the 4th qtr of the NO game, I think they were trying to be aggressive.  But the receivers kept dropping the ball, or we got sacked.   Up until KB's big catch, we had four straight incompletions on pass attempts, and I think at least 3 of the 4 were drops.  Its hard to be aggressive when your receivers keep dropping the ball, and your offensive line is down to its third center.

The same crap happened last year, but we had bigger leads, were luckier, and faced worse teams than we have this year.  Rivera and company suck balls.

I think handcuffing Cam should be a mortal sin. I know when this Offense is clicking, Cam can look like a magician. But when we are struggling, Cam looks mortal.

 

We are not the only team that gives a cushion with their CBs. It is designed to let the CBs drive on the WR to make a play, and to keep the play in front of you. The longer you make an Offense drive, the more the chances of a mistake go up. It is a solid strategy, but it is boring for fans.

And at least against NO the Defense stayed aggressive as well. They got pressure with 4 DL, they used the zone blitz effectively, and they did CB, and S blitzes as well. Even late in the game we were running stunts, and rushing 5. So they did try to stay aggressive on both sides of the ball.

 

Man those drops.

I'm honestly surprised it's a 132/100 first/second half point split I would have guessed it was more like 150/80

I honestly think it's a culmination of reasons.  I'll start a list of what comes off my head:

Mental.  I honestly think some of it is getting mental.  You could tell in the fourth quarter thursday the team had no chance of doing anything on offense or defense.  Just their persona.  They knew it was going to happen.

Too conservative.  I think we all know this can be an issue with this coaching staff.  Especially on defense.  When we get big leads we just give teams huge cushions.  I'll admit I'm not great with X's and O's when it comes to talking football, but it's clear we tone down the pressure and have our secondary players back off with big leads.  They go away from what works.  This allows teams to just effortlessly rip off 12-15 yard plays.

Lack of execution on offense.  From Shula down.  We're all quick to blame Shula and I do it too, but our offensive players simply don't execute when playing with a lead.  I actually thought Shula remained pretty aggressive in the second half Thursday, he let Cam try some passes on early downs even with a big lead.  He also called a phenomenal tight end screen to Greg Olsen that went for a big first down on a third down conversion.  But we had some just terrible dropped passes Thursday, a lot that killed drives.  Dickson, Brown, Benjamin, Funchess I know all had awful drops that would have been nice gains.  

Our depth sucks.  I think this is some of it.  We got gassed up front especially on the DL Thursday and the Saints feasted, we lack depth everywhere right now
