Are we going to waste another first round pick on defense?

Yes we likely will, and honestly its OK.

One, we obviously need help at DE, S, and CB. Hell, if we don't re-sign Addison we need two DE's.

Two, its a loaded defensive draft.

Three, defense wins championships. Look what the Broncos did to us, what the Seahawks did to the Broncos, etc. Every time a high powered offense meets a top defense, the defense wins.

Four, we have a focused need on offense. The line. We have the QB and yes we have the receivers. No hero deep about taking high WR's. Has that won Luck a championship? Has Tom Brady needed high round WR's. But yes we need oline.

I can only hope that we spend money on the secondary this off season and stock up on young talented lineman for both sides in the draft.

Given our defensive scheme, I agree.

But... we're assuming Ron will be the coach.

If he gets bounced and we bring in a coach and a DC who wants to play man up, I could absolutely understand a CB.

Drafting a CB in the top-10 is absolutely dumb as fug

OTs like Matt Kalil, Luke Joekel, and Greg Robinson? There have been a ton of highly touted rookie OTs bust in recent years.  Probably more busts than hits. Not sure why, because an OT used to be one of the safest high picks you could make, but that seems to have pulled a 180 recently.

I wouldn't complain about either Garrett or Peppers as the pick, but honestly, they're probably the only two defensive prospects I wouldn't complain about with our 1st rounder.

You know you can apply that same logic to pass rushers like Dion Jordan, Mingo, Claiborne. Ext....

I won't mind going defense IF we bring in Desean Jackson an other highly coveted free agents

Have you seen all the hand wringing around here about Josh Norman, a former 5th rounder?

If you had a DC who wanted to play straight man on the outside and Darrell Revis was there, you think that would be a dumb pick?

I don't. Not at all. With our current defensive scheme, I agree. It would be a dumb pick.

With that said, I honestly don't want a CB in the top 10 and I highly doubt we'll take one.

Absolutely. Pass rushers have always been a bit of a risky proposition. The difference is that OTs used to be a slam dunk.

The thing about the pass rusher busts is that they tend to be relatively predicable.  They're usually the guys with high production and tweener size or the guys with ideal measurables who's production never lived up to those measurables.

Depends on who's on the board. I wouldn't necessarily see a guy like Peppers or Garrett as a "waste".

I'd rather have an OT, but I'm just not sure there's anyone there I'm comfortable with.

I see that too, not unless someone shoots up the board between now and draft day. But its never a good thing to go off hype. Mostly defensive players have been the most consistent draft.

The real question is "Are we really going to waste another first round pick?" End of question.

You can't reach for a player just because you think that's what you need. (e.g. Last year 3 CBs)

There is no OT worth our pick. Fournette is worth the argument. Maybe Mike Williams after our WRs embarrassing performance. All signs point to defense again.

We need to have a balanced strategy. We have the cap space to sign good players. Accomplish that and finish it off with great draft picks. Real BPA's.

Well also CB is far from our biggest issue right now.  Bradberry and Worley have absolutely gotten better this year and shown they deserve every chance at locking positions down for the long term.  Especially Worley.  This team ahs way too many weaknesses to spend an early pick at a position where we already have talent for the future.  Give Worley and Bradberry a full offseason of work, find a vet that can play nickel in free agency and the CB position is fine for next year.  Maybeeeee a late pick on one if we see talent there.  Now I could live with an S in the first round, as long as his name is Jamal Adams.
