Steve Smiths Retirement Letter is hilarious.

I love him.  I doubt he will retire as a Panther, mostly because that's what the fans would like.  And we don't count.

I really hope he understands what he means to us and chooses to do otherwise. If it was up to Charlotte he would have stayed.

He would have made Cam a better QB but they were scared.

Well he had a contract with Baltimore, so the Ravens letterhead is no surprise. It wasn't like he was going to send one out with a Panthers logo on it.

Either way, his time with the Panthers is in the books. If he doesn't officially retire with Carolina, it doesn't change much. Though I think that if he doesn't, years down the line when he begins reminiscing on his career, and the highlights that actually matter show him in a Panther jersey, he would regret it to a degree, but that's on him.

I think Smitty and his family know what he means to Charlotte and what Charlotte meant during his time here, and still means to him now. This is his home now, and he knows it.

That said, I don't know that he'll have a ceremonial retirement thing here while Gettleman is still associated with the Panthers. From what I can read on the situation, that will probably never ever be water under the bridge, especially to someone like Smitty.

I don't know when and I don't know how, but he will be honored by the Panthers in some form. IMHO, and I know a lot of you are going to play the "bad teammate" card, but he deserves to have his jersey retired at the very least. I, for one, also think he needs a statue out there somewhere.

He's easily the best Panther to ever step on the field (maybe Cam takes that title one day, but not yet.)

Actually he was let go because he didn't want to be here while Cam learned and developed. He said so himself. He was just pissed how he found out about it, not that they let him go. He made millions more going to Baltimore since we still had to pay him his first year in Baltimore.

That letter needed an asterisk to clarify that he'll continue to antagonize defensive backs in their nightmares. Fred Smoot may have a support group for all his prior victims by now.

Smitty can try to paint himself as a Raven all he wants but history will remember him mostly as a Panther. Better ice up to that fact, Smitty.

Could you imagine Steve Smith WR Coach, Ricky Proehl OC? I bet the WR room would sh*t bricks!

Cam Newton would not be able to deal with a coach like Steve Smith holding a player accountable for their desire on the field in adverse situations. Even though that is exactly what Cam needs to elevate to legend status. Then maybe Cam can learn how to hold his offensive players accountable and not just roll his eyes at them with a smirk when they screw up.

I wish he would take ownership. Cam needs some Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas, and Peyton Manning fire to lead the offense. Until then, he will just want to be everyones' friend on the playground and have them look up to him as the best player on the field.

The Steve Smith way, eh? No better way to inspire your teammates than to go around assaulting them.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
