It's funny because DeAngelo probably gave more of his personal time to interacting with fans than anyone else. Only NFL player I ever went bowling with.

And there we have it.

DWill was about as fake as they come. He marketed himself well and therefore people are fans of who he wants you to believe he is.

None of these events were publicized so I'm not sure what he gained from hanging around with a bunch of fans? It would be one thing if he invited the media to attend, but he didn't... I think he generally enjoyed connecting with fans on a personal level.

Not sure if things changed, but I can tell you he was so disliked in 2008 that virtually the entire offense showed up to one of these non-publicized fan events and mingled, signed autographs, played laser tag, etc...

Not trying to change anyone's mind or defend DeAngelo, just sharing some perspective based on my personal experiences.

This is really not a newsflash though. We've heard similar things before about D-Will.

Not trying to stir the pot (OK,maybe a little bit), but the only big name signing that didn't act publicly butt-hurt when they left here was Pep.  Of course that was during the Hurney Era. ***cough cough***

Guys like Hurney everyone likes because he was so easy to screw over. Kinda like that boss that lets you get away with anything.

its sad but plausible

I enjoyed being able to hang with him but got more of an impression that he's not a douche, he's just not from the same mold as most of the other guys in the league in a sport where team mentality is everything. But it's not like I went kayaking with him for a weekend or anything

I liked the guy, on and off the field. Things went south pretty fast when he was shown the door, but that happens in just about any business at some time or another. In HR circles they call it poisoning the well when a fired person on the way out trashes the company and their co-workers -- it is often completely out of character and usually stems from them feeling betrayed.

Heck, I've burned bridges on my way out before, most of us have.

FWIW, none of us really know the guy, except from a handful of twitter comments, some rumors, and a few news articles.   No way possible anyone can made an accurate assessment of someone's personality based on such extremely limited information.

Could be he is a nice enough guy, but with a prickly personality.  Could be he is as nice as they come and we are all wrong.  Or could be that he is a complete a$$.  No way to know for certain.

1) You can't avoid outing yourself as a tool at some point if you really are one. He is a confirmed tool.

2) I'm glad Stewart is already able to start writing him off Panthers records.

3) I'd be interested in what Stew has to say about him, seeing as he was always with him at those events and of course their shared position and nickname.

What events are you referring to because I remember most of DeAngelo's feed just being random selfies with fans? And I think it's obvious what he had to gain. If the accusations are true we basically let him be Peppers without the backlash.

Here's 10 players Hurney allowed to walk for more money elsewhere that would have stayed here if they could "screw over" so easily.

Mushing Muhammad

Will Witherspoon

Desahuan Foster

Ricky Manning Jr

Marlon Mcree

Doug Evans

Marlon Mcree

Richard Marshall

James Anderson

Travelle Wharton

A google search would surely yield more but I had a free second to address this myth.

Hurney also almost always came out ahead on player trades.

Greg Olsen for a third

Salvaged a third out of Kris Jenkins who wanted our

Al Wallace for jay Williams.

Where Hurney went wrong was by not having the balls or authority to Can Fox after the 08 meltdown. Then from their on he made horrible draft day trades that mortgaged the future as he was trying to save his job and failed. He earned his firing, so that's water under the bridge. But this myth about him overpaying everyone is silly and all because JR decided to tank the 2010 season and let almost all of our best players hit free agency at the same time.

A quicker Google search might have told you that Doug Evans was signed (and released) before Hurney was GM.

Evans left as a free agent the same offseason that Hurney was promoted.

Either way my point remains the same

Im not trying to turn this into a Hurney vs Gettleman thing. Just dispelling what I consider a myth about Hurney always willing to overpay players.

The Jury is still out on Gettleman where as the verdict has already been served on Hurney.

@Mr. Scot

Outside 2011 offseason, where we had our backs against the wall, when players league wide got overpaid, do you have of him being so easy to "screw over"?
