Possible FA target: Matt Elam, S

All I know is we need a stud at SS, whether it's Elam, Cyprien, or Adams. If we have an athlete who can hit and is intelligent enough to become a leader back there, we are going to start killing teams.

Imagine one of these SS's, Kurt Coleman at FS where he can pick passes and also blow dudes up, Shaq getting more PT and the chance to start drilling dudes, and Luke and TD also doing their thing.

It will be a bloodbath all over the middle of the field.

That's enough to bring the defense to a new level.

Unless Barnett, Fournette, and Garret are all gone, I don't see us going with Adams.

Not that he is not a stud... he is... but we are riddled with youth in the secondary and this FO has shown an obvious propensity to insert vets, on prove it deals, into the secondary.

Whomever the vet is, bet he is going to be a guy who has done it before, but is coming off a down year and a guy who is somewhat familiar with our scheme/terminology... or, failing that, seasoned enough where it won't matter.

My ideal plan for the Panthers would be go secondary in FA.  Depth at CB and S this year.  Draft DE, OT, RB according to best available.  I have rarely been right but I could see Solomon Thomas getting a major look from the Panthers.  Good measurable and talent and awesome character.

One dude I would love to see on our team is Demarcus Walker from FSU.  Every game I watched of them he dominated.

I'm good with Elam and like the OP, I did like him coming out of UF.

Two things, IMO, Panthers fans need to come to grips with (barring some crazy combine/pro day/ teams moving up on draft day) -

1) Eric Berry will not be a Panther next year

2) Jamal Adams will be off the board by #8

I like Malik Hooker, but that slides Coleman to SS, and I would prefer Coleman at FS.

So, like a few others have mentioned, let's go get our young pairing at SS in free agency.

I am a Cyprien guy, but guys like Elam, Jefferson, Swearinger, Harmon and Hyde would all fit what we want in a SS. They are all still young, and would solidify our back end, while taking a major need off of our draft board.  I feel like Jefferson and Swearinger are going to be in that first tier of $$ due to name recognition, with Cyprien, Elam, Hyde and Harmon in that next tier of $$.

Glad we got that figured out.

Seriously, the more I read posts that differ in opinion, the more I see common ground.  I think it is highly unlikely that we address the SS issue in the draft--and that is fine with me because there is some talent out there in free agency. That has to be the move, and a player between $3-6m is a cap-friendly move.  The more I think about it, for example, the more I realize that Elam''s market value is probably around $3.5m with incentive bonuses. I really like Hyde here though.  He might be in the $6m and up range.

Oh nooooo....not MaryJ....the worst thing ever....literally just lock him away forever...clearly can't be trusted with 4.5 ounces and a bottle of pain meds.

I have 6 grams of Oxy on me right now but only 1 ounce of MJ...guess I'm a super villain.

But seriously marijuana should be and will be legal one day so no one gives a fug about that. And I don't care about the pain meds either dood plays football and they all have it. Mine is for combat wounds and most pro athletes suffer from chronic pain too.

Literally 0 fugs given when it comes to poo like this.

Agreed on Walker. It's odd how overlooked he's been so far leading up to the draft with most assuming he's a late 2nd rounder to possibly 3rd rounder. The guy was an absolute force at FSU. I think it's based primarily on his size. He's short and squatty which isn't the prototypical edge rusher build, but he reminds me a lot of our own Charles Johnson, who to be fair was a 3rd round pick himself. But, I think Walker is further along coming into the draft than CJ was.

Well, so much for that. I think we'll be very cautious of the types of characters we bring into the secondary given the youth we have in the secondary. Not saying Elam is a bad guy, there seems to be quite a bit of evidence that he's a good guy. But, given his injury history and this arrest, it seems like he may be having some substance abuse issues related to pain management. I hope not and that's pure speculation, but it seems to fit. Even f he does, I hope he overcomes it. Brett Favre did.

Was he not a first rounder though?  I see your point--at S, you really need to find the athlete that has the skill set to match your system.

Here is name that sounds like a Gettlemen free agent:

Micah Hyde

He will be looking for a starting gig--he can play SS and FS, which makes him a nice fit for our D--if it stays the same.

I traded for him in Madden for cheap. Don't know why he was on the block. It's pretty funny sometimes to see players on your team in Madden actually happen in real life lol.
