Gettleman speaks!

Alrighty! We finally get a few quotes from Dave Gettleman himself via Jourdan Rodrigue, and though there is nothing earth shattering, G-man and Rivera are kind of singing the same tune.

As has been reported on Rodrigue's Twitter in a post here, G-man has expressed interest in a few players, but as a close-to-the-vest and tongue-in-cheek kinda guy as it pertains to certain matters, he of course didn't give much.

"Gettleman chuckled a bit when I asked about specific names – obviously he doesn’t want to give away too much, and he has only been watching two days of practice.

'I hate to be evasive – but you’re asking me to comment on watching two days of practice,' he said."

Gettleman went on to praise the "speed and explosiveness" of Tanoh Kpassagnon, according to Rodrigue. Moreover he mentioned draft stock riser O.J. Howard, which Rodrigue referred to as having a "phenomenal week...as a pass catcher and as a blocker."

Call it a smokescreen if you like, but after listening to Gettleman, there seems to be genuine interest in Howard.

“Obviously the Alabama kid is interesting,” he said. “The O.J. Howard kid. You know, two years ago against Clemson, he had 3,000 yards receiving on two catches. He hasn’t disappointed. He’s got the strike zone to die for."

G-man is not just impressed with Howard, but like Rivera before him, he noted that there was some potential in general at TE and the slot receiver positions.

“It’s a good group. We’re gonna make sure to turn over every rock,” he said. “There’s a nice group of that here, the tight ends and slot receivers.”

One thing that Gettleman doesn't seem impressed by is---you guessed it---offensive tackle.

“It’s not great,” he said. “Here’s the other thing. In the past I’ve gotten killed for not drafting tackles. I’ll tell you right now, if you overdraft a guy, you’re going to be upset. The coaches are going to be upset. The team is going to be upset. Everybody’s going to be mad at the guy, and it’s not his fault. ... No, he was a sixth round pick, and you took him the fourth round. That’s not his fault. He wasn’t jumping up in front of you in the draft saying ‘pick me, pick me!’ You decided to take him!

“I just will not reach. No matter how bad the perceived need is, I’m not going to reach.”

So, unless someone steps up before the draft, this pretty much exes out an OT on the first day of the draft (at least). We're probably going to try and fill that weakness in FA, as well as use FA to set up the draft in general (which Getty repeated in the article).

Rodrigue also gave some of Getty's thoughts on Oher, and what I believe he perceives as optimistic about KK and possibly Ginn, but what I see as basically GM-speak, so I'd definitely show her some love by hitting the link

Gettleman is optimistic, so perhaps we should be too.

“Because obviously...we’re gonna have four picks in the top 100. So we have a chance to really improve our club.”

Don't worry yourself there dawg. Compared to some of the stuff we get to read around here. That was a piece of cake.

 

But...folks don't take kindly to that optimism talk round these parts. You may wish to throw some negativity in there to sooth the natives.

Can people understand that drafting a tackle in the first is like drafting a third rounder in the first in this class? No sure fire hitter.

Hopefully you're right but as we have seen over and over and over again Gettleman value guys wayyyy different than we do and even other "experts".  Every single year he has drafted players several rounds ahead of where other people said they should go. So don't try to predict his moves

From what I'm reading, he doesn't like any tackles in this class. Doubtful he'll take one.

As far as "overvaluing" players, James Bradberry was great at #62, which was a late round pick. Bradberry was on plenty of draft boards picked in the higher 3rd round nearing draft week, as mockers started seeing his potential. I think walterfootball had him going to the Bucs as well in the 3rd.

Sure, he may appear to pick "high", but I can assure you those picks were worth it.

Yeah, I really don't believe Gettleman has been more than a round off from the consensus with anyone except David Mayo, and that was only a fifth round pick that has worked out honestly.

Of course being a round off can have positive or negative repercussions (but we'll never know the specific opportunity costs).

I'd say many thought he was picked early, but I agree he was more than worth where we got him based on his rookie year performance.

I don't get the whole I won't reach quote, most analysts and many experts consider some of his picks to be drafted rounds ahead of where they're projected.

The whole not reaching for ot's I get it but you gotta figure out some way to get a guy in here for the future. I just feel he has some rule book he strictly follows when drafting and it sounds good but doesn't make sense....

Gman says he doesnt reach but he has a major soft spot for defense/Dline and has been known to over value them over need. I would argue that last season Butler may have been the best player on his board "reaching" for Derrick Henry, Hunter Henry or Sterling Shepard would have provided way more value than a 4th string DT. that said hindsight is 20/20 and BPA vs Need is a very thin line.

Again, GMs and draft analysts are two different hemispheres of drafters.

Unknowing to the public, many NFL drafters may value a player more than the media does, and that such could lead to what is perceived as a "reach."

Most of Gettleman's picks that appear to be "reaches" were probably 1 round high at the most. He's had mostly 25 and below picks in the draft, and drafting late each round is like drafting a high pick of the following round.
