Last I checked Devin drops far more balls than LaFell ever did.

Lafell:

2016- 1 drop, 107 targets (0.93%)

2015 - 6 drops, 74 targets (8.11%)

2014 - 2 drops, 119 targets (1.68%)

2013 - 6 drops, 86 targets (6.98%)

2012 - 3 drops, 76 targets (3.95%)

2011 - 2 drops, 56 targets (3.57%)

2010 - 7 drops, 77 targets (9.09%)

total - 27 drops, 595 targets (4.53%)

Funchess:

2016 - 3 drops, 58 targets (5.17%)

2015 - 4 drops, 63 targets (6.34%)

total - 7 drops, 121 targets (5.78%)

It's like people are saying Funchess will get better with experience. Even crazier, they said the same thing about LaFell.

@thomas96, as far as I'm concerned, you need to get on this first. I seriously believe that Funchess is the receiver with the widest gap pertaining to people's opinions regarding whether or not he gets open. He may be the most divisive player overall, as to whether or not he's a good option for us going forward.

Within that same vein, @sanjay_rajput is comparing a raw rookie WR who reportedly had a significant learning curve due to the need to learn all three receiver positions according to the coaches, to a speed receiver that is more Ginn-esque than anything. That's really not a very helpful comparison. So some clarity is definitely needed.

Funchess is still very young. He is only 22 years old. He will be 23 going into his third year. This should be a huge plus, people. The third year is historically the breakout year for receivers. Funchess will be seasoned by the time that some young receivers are really getting their feet wet. This is NOT the time to bail on him. Let's give it another year before talking that kinda talk.

I want to see him one more year before I ship him off. He made some clutch catches in 15, when Cam had time to throw the ball. Get Cam's OL straight and we will see which WRs are worth keeping. In the mean time, we have to get a quick, speedy WR (ala NE), who can get open quicker than our big WRs.

Having a speedy WR is one thing, having a QB that can make quick decisions is another....

You had better believe that if he were on a team that knew how to DEVELOP wide-receivers and get them involved in the offense suited to their strengths, like the Patriots, Funchess would become dominant.

He can be dominant here.  He just needs a competent OC and a good WR coach.  I liked Proehl, but our guys haven't really been performing up to his resume.

I believe you. I absolutely think Funchess can be a very productive piece in an offense. Now whether or not he can be "dominant," that may be a matter of definition.  In some ways I would rather have all my receivers be optimally efficient than have one receiver be dominant (but of course I'll take what I can get). I don't believe that a true WR1 is even necessary if everybody is playing to their potential. And over time I've kind of moved away from affixing numbers as a means to define a receiver's value. I like the term "playmaker" in some respects a little better. I do believe Funchess is a potential consistent playmaker from what I've seen.

Where I may tend to disagree is blaming our receivers' lack of production on Proehl. That is more of an OC-HC problem in my opinion. You got to get a player involved in the normal flow of the game and call plays that fit to his strengths if you want him to dominate. Funchess has flashed enough in my opinion to know that he can play at the pro level. He was really coming on at the end of the 15-1 season, even notching a 100+ yard effort. Benjamin's rookie year should speak for itself. Both were raw receivers, particularly Funchess, so I'd say that their modest progress over the course of their respective rookie seasons was a direct result of good coaching by Proehl. It seems like everyone and everything took a step back this past season. That seems to speak to a larger problem, whether it be scheme, fit, play calling or uninspired coaching, something seems to have broken down that superceded the positional level.

Looking back at the last 2 seasons, Fun-Fun has been under performing for the investment we made. I believe the main reason is that he does not provide any unique skill sets to set him apart from Olsen & KB. While he has size he doesn't play big, his speed & short area movement is average and his route running ability is poor. Panthers  have enough big body WRs , what we are lacking is a slot WR.

I would be willing to trade Funchess for a 3rd or 4th rd pick. Would you?

Are you kidding?

3 years. That's  the average time frame it takes for a receiver to develop into his own in the NFL.

Where he was drafted isn't even being thought of by anyone in the front office of BOA.

Investment? What did we lose? Butler was more of an investment and that's more of a bust so far.

A bust? He graded better than half the first rounders so far. He's been productive for what his purposed drafted spot was.

Should I remind you we haven't blocked a field goal in a while? You notice Butler did that...twice?

He was atrocious in run blocking, by the time he develops into decent player his rookie contract will be up.

Not my style to bash players, but I expressed my opinion of Funch when he was drafted. Thought it was a giant reach cause at the very best Funch was a mid 3rd talent. I hated the whole 2015 class truly, thought Dave was drinking his own jucie and believing he was waaaaaaay over thinking. Luckily Funch is still young, he's even younger than a few coming in the draft. I hope Funch works hard and becomes a true difference maker.

I'm still loling at RR stating he would be a matchup nightmare during the press conference.....
