Hornets Make A Nothing Trade

This is kind of a weird move.

To recap:

Hornets Get: Chris Anderson (who they are waiving) and Cash 

Cleveland Gets: 2017 2nd Round pick (top 55 protected)

Chris Andersen (Birdman) is hurt and can't play so it definitely makes sense that Charlotte would waive him as we don't need him. Cleveland definitely looking to be active at the deadline so they needed to clear a roster spot. Charlotte is sending a 2nd round pick to Cavs which is top 55 protected for 2017. Obviously Charlotte won't finish in the top 5 of the league so they have no risk in losing that pick and only needed to send it in order to finalize a deal. 

The kicker for Charlotte is the cash. Cleveland needed to relieve themselves of luxury tax penalties and had to give Charlotte something of value. Cho can use that cash to help with cap space this summer OR they can use it to help balance out salaries in a trade that is forthcoming. I think this is more likely since Charlotte is eleigible for the full mid level exception ($8M+) with how their cap stands currently.

Perhaps we can use the extra cash to get rid of Brian Roberts (since his salary is so low) for a more efficient backup PG.

This is the definition of a setup move.

The question now is what does Cho do with said "free money". I obviously don't know the guy personally, but Michael Jordan doesn't seem like the kind of owner to prioritize strengthening the bottom line or giving himself some additional spending $. 

Jordan likes to win so I have to imagine that the money would be put to use towards another trade. We still also have the $250K trade exception cash we got from Memphis for Troy Daniels.

Or perhaps I just want us to make another move so bad that I have blinders on.

The short answer is that this trade is almost insignificant enough to not be newsworthy. The Cavs make it newsworthy.

The easiest way to think about the trade is that Cleveland is making a trade to clear roster space and Charlotte wanted Cash.

In order to facilitate the deal, both teams gave up something that neither will end up using. Cleveland send Birdman to the Hornets and the Hornets sent a protected 2017 2nd round pick to Cleveland.

Anderson has a torn acl and can't play, plus CLT has 0 need for him so we waived him. In order to cover the cost of waiving Birdman ($335K), Cleveland sent us $750K which left us with extra cash.

The pick Charlotte sent is top 55 protected which means that the Hornets would have to finish in the top 5 of the league in order for Cleveland to actually use the pick which isn't happening.

So basically Cleveland has a roster spot to work with for the upcoming trade deadline and Charlotte has $415K to use for either salary cap relief, salary matching in a trade or to put towards the bottom line aka pocket change for MJ.

In conclusion:

Charlotte gives Cleveland a roster spot for $415K

Business move.
