List of High priced Free Agents that have been released since 2013

FAs released since 2013.png

A look at a lot of guys many on here wanted us to sign to big deals. I remember Verner and Anthony Collins specifically. For those who don't know, Verner was just released this morning by TB.

But it's still interesting to see how many guys were handed a ton of money and just didn't produce. It's the dirty side of free agency that could end up hurting your team in the long run. While I'm still on the "sign some talent" bandwagon this offseason, I'd prefer that the team does their due-diligence and sign guys they know can come in and produce in the systems we have in place, not just hot names for the FA period.

Luckily, we have Dave Gettleman as GM.

Signing someone with a big name is almost as likely to happen as signing back  Greg Hardy.

To clarify, we're not going to sign someone like JPP on high contracts. We might sign some decent chunk guys that fit our system, but still don't expect much if we want to prioritize our guys first.

So them small 'prove it' contracts he fills our roster with produce more than them big 'pay that man' contracts? It's almost as if DG knew this already.....

"Do you know how to read a pie chart, Son?"

"Nah, but I got this chaht of overpaid FAs in mah bahk pawket..."

Can't frigging understand DG sometimes. Couple years back he said:

"If O'Connor falls to us, I won't complain"

Spent a long time looking for O'Connor until I realized he was trying to say "a corner"

I remember when he said that and I thought the same thing... Beantown's gonna Beantown....

To be fair both Tampa and Miami are forced to spend Cap every year so no player will ever live up to the numbers. There are also a bunch of FAs that live up to there deals. Carolinas problem is we never get any good FAs and let our elite players walk. Your ok if you let a guy like KK walk if you replace him with another elite player at a position of need but if you don't then well you're the Panthers.

The only time I remember a big name working out for us was Ken Lucas, that should tell y'all something right there.

we need to do what the giants did last year, sign a bunch of mid-tier FA's and maybe one big signing.

honestly Berry is the only big name out there that I'd say is actually worth his price.

A lot of those are just poorly run franchises and the examples were obviously picked to make a point.  There are plenty of examples of good FA signings that weren't cheap too.

As OP mentioned, these players were chosen as examples of high-profile FAs that many were clamoring for and complaining when Carolina didn't sign them. Are there other players that have worked out? Absolutely. But the premise is that high-priced FAs aren't always a panacea.

Additionally, you yourself call the signings 'examples of poorly-run franchises' - by extension, what does that say about the teams that didn't make these signings?

    • But that's the point, if the locker room feels that way, then you're going to upset them by still keeping Bryce around and playing him over the Top 10 pick. Again, it goes one of 3 ways... 1. Bryce plays well enough to earn an extension 2. Bryce still sucks and we draft his replacement who starts Week 1 with a new QB as his backup 3. Bryce still sucks, we draft his replacement in the 1st, but they start the season backing up a new vet QB who was brought in to be his mentor. With an OUTSIDE chance at a 4th option where Bryce plays well enough to convince the team to let him play out the 5th year option and then make a decision.  Which I can't see it happening, but there is still a non zero chance of that happening I guess. The only way we draft a QB next year and still have Bryce on the roster, is if we're taking someone in the middle rounds hoping to develop them as a long term backup to Bryce.
    • I hear you. But I am not absolving Legette just because he is from my neck of the woods or anything else.  Tge comment was more about the fans uneven application of blame.  I do agree that there is a noticeable disconnect between him and the QB and that he might do better with a more polished and capable delivery man.  Abd don’t feel that they used XL right, or at least how I expected it to look.  And that could be a function of a reticent WB that shies away from that style of attack. I mean it was either him or Canales that pretty much eliminated downfield from the playbook - even while we see guys running free at times. It Could work if they commit to it.  Whoever isn’t committing.
    • Lot of passion there.  Look, if Bryce plays down to the level that we feel the need to draft a QB high, you don’t think the locker room might be ready for anything that helps them win?   There are s lot of angles to this that could come into play depending on what happens this year.
