How can you upgrade a position by filling up spots at said roster position with some of the same mediocre guys?

Addison deserved a contract and has contributed in an area of weakness, although a little over 7 per seems a bit steep.  All in all, I'm glad to Mario back.

Horton though?

...

Until we see the contract details, this signing isn't really much news either way.

My speculative gut says it's a low risk signing to reward a solid JAG as insurance in case we don't pluck someone better.

I do hope we fill out spots #3-5 with someone better than Horton, but if not, we have him on the roster on a likely cheap deal.

Horton can't rush the pass for poo but he is great against the run.

Agree.  There were games where we couldn't set an edge.  Our Dline improved quite a bit versus the run once Horton started starting.  I might try to look more deeply at the stats for both Horton & Addison, as I think these are both pretty solid players on our line.

I'd STILL like us to draft a promising pass rushing DE to develop, since it's not a position where rookies usually make a big impact... (and I think the jury is still out on Ealy, my hopes are much lower for him than they were a year ago...).  But this is solid work by Dave.  Sets us up for the draft quite well.

KK, Star, Butler, Love, Addison, Ealy & Horton are the foundation of a pretty decent line.  Bring back CJ for depth / veteran presence (if the price is right), or find a vet DE in free agency.  Draft a pass-rusher DE, and we really should be quite solid on the D-line.

we had all those guys last year...we need some new fresh hungry younger guys too

Oh, I totally agree.  But assuming the price is pretty low on Horton, I'm happy to keep him on the roster as depth and to give us some added strength against the run that we were missing during the games when he wasn't playing last year.

Anyone who watched us actually play last year realizes that it's a bit misleading that we led the league in sacks. We did it by blitzing like mad to cover up for a weak secondary and the fact that we didn't have any dominant individual pass rushers. I don't think it's why we want to be forced to do.

That's a common assumption but not exactly true. Our DL was above average in pressure. The big change was Worley's improvement and Bradberry returning resulting in many more plays where we get pressure actually resulting in sacks. DE group was probably slightly below average in the pressure department but DT last year made up for it. Would love to get back to 2013 though with a couple dominant edge players. Sign CJ, Peppers, draft a guy in the first couple rounds and have them all compete and I think the position will be solid.

Ealy could break out any time too. Should not be counting on that but can definitely see it happening. Classic Panthers draft pick. 3 up and down years on rookie contract, dominant year in contract year then is tagged and then walks or just walks after one great year. In recent memory both Josh and Hardy are similar situations. Ealy has the potential to make our DL dominant again next year and take the team over the top. That's why I'd kind of like to see an extension for Ealy for like 3 years, $5M per. Not sure he would do it or if taking the chance would be worth it for us but would hate to see him breakout and have another tag situation or have to let him walk for big dollars and take a 3rd round comp pick...

We usely carry 5 DE's during the season..

So looking from the outside (must see horton's contract to make a better assement) i hope this is how it plays out..

Sign Pep or CJ who ever is cheaper..

Draft a 1st or 2nd round edge rusher.. (hopefully Barnnet or Thomas)

Horton and Delaire battles for the final spot at DE during camp.. (again depending on the contract details). .

My wish is the DLine rotation looks like (Barnett, Addison, Ealy, Pep [horton or Delaire])

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
