Devin Funchess gives his thoughts on new celebration rule

DEVIN FUNCHESS [Panthers]: Week 2 vs. 49ers. I saw Kelvin [Benjamin] do a dance the first game [at Denver], and this was the second game and it was a nice little dance and I thought it was cool. Kelvin was coming off an injury and that kind of confidence is good, so we come to the home game and he scored at home in front of the home fans and he did his dance. I was like, Damn, that’s sweet, so I came in towards the end of it, and they threw the flag. I was just happy that my guy scored and he got that confidence back. It was funny, after we got to the sideline, he said, ‘Yeah, that’s the Pause On ’Em. He called it the freeze on ‘em, the Pause on ’Em. That last motion at the end, where we have one hand on our chest and one out in front, that’s like pause, like freeze.

FUNCHESS [Panthers]: They said we can’t do like Calvin Johnson and dunk on them no more. They said you can’t physically touch the crossbar. I actually asked the question, I said, ‘So we can’t dunk on it, right?’ And they said, ‘Yes, you can’t physically touch the goalposts.’ They never said we couldn’t throw a ball.

FUNCHESS [Panthers]: No, and if you watch it, you can see I messed it up a little bit. I didn’t practice it. I thought it was harmless. I just joined in because I thought it was cool. The only thing they showed us [in the rules meeting] was a clip of the Giants, they were taking pictures of each other. They said we couldn’t do stuff like that. I mean, I wasn’t even on beat with it [Kelvin’s dance]. I was just happy for my guy; this is a team sport so I was happy for my guy. I thought I would join in as a good teammate.

Believe it or not, Funchess has more upside than Kelvin Benjamin.

Few years from now, we could be talking about Funchess as our #1 WR with Kelvin Benjamin as our monstrous #2. If Funchess gets the hang of his routes and showing his stuff on field, he's easily going to be a star.

Don't mean to be disrespectful to a player, just want him to major on the majors.  Once he starts scoring, a lot, then he can work on his celebration moves.  The "get open" moves come first for me.

Umm, he wasn't even trying to celebrate what he did.  He was trying to join a team mate.  He did nothing wrong and was only wanting to be a good team mate.

How this can be construed as a negative towards him is beyond me.

I still like the kid, he's got a lot of growing to do.  He'll be fine.

    • I'm looking at the schedule and I see a 10+win season easy.  I think Carolina goes undefeated in the division.  I also believe that the Bears, Bengals, Lions, Browns, Steelers are very winnable.  Revenge game with phillips and the eagles could be a win.  Honestly only 2 games I see as chalking up a L to off the bat is the Seahawks and Broncos.
    • I guess so. Don't think I was involved with previous discussions.  Tepper is one of the newest owners in the NFL. Dan is going into his 3rd season as a GM - ever. Dave is going into his 3rd season as a HC - ever. Before becoming a HC, he was an OC/playcaller for one season total. Idzik is about to go into his 1st year as a play caller - ever. WRs are rookies, sophomores and 3rd year guys - though the experienced 3rd year guys are XL and Coker (who has missed a ton of games). TEs are guys going into their 2nd and 3rd seasons, and Tommy Tremble - though Sanders has missed a ton of games. QB has played 3 years. Chuba is an experienced RB, but Brooks and Etienne have taken very little snaps at the position. O-line is more experienced vets with some talent - which is HUGE. Need them to stay healthy. I mean the offense is very young in every aspect except O-line. You see it differently?
