Payton "playing up" Ginn. The truth is out there...

I'm going to be honest. I was somewhat shocked to see Ted Ginn Jr.'s name in a headline at NFL.com. I mean the story's over. They signed him a long time ago. Why in the world is he being mentioned? It's kind of humorous to me to be honest.

Not that I really "care" about what the Saints are doing (because frankly I believe we're top-to-bottom better, even if they do get Mixon @nctarheel0619), but I suppose Ginn was brought in to replace Cooks.

"The Saints traded in Brandin Cooks for an older, supposedly tougher model this offseason, and Saints head coach Sean Payton is just fine with that.

"'I made this comment: I think this guy has played better in the middle to the back half of his career than the front,' Payton said of Ted Ginn this week at the NFL Annual Meeting (via ESPN.com). 'I do think he's got punt-return value. There's a level of toughness that comes with him that I like. And he's still, when he's playing in each game, the fastest player on the field.'"

And Conor Orr alludes to the fact that Payton is using more than coach-speak.

"While talking up a new acquisition is part of the offseason routine, Payton does seem especially smitten with the boom-or-bust wide receiver, who has never had a 1,000-yard season in his 10-year career (Cooks had two in his first three seasons). Because a young first-round pick was part of the deal, he has to be."

So, I guess Payton is doing a number on himself by talking up Ginn, the same player whom Dave Gettleman and company---and many Huddlers, myself included---didn't think merited the money that Ginn apparently wanted, particularly in light of Ginn's arguably limited skill set. Personally, I just think that we can get a better receiver at a relative fraction of even that relatively low price.

But you know, Payton is apparently envisioning Ginn playing a more important role. Payton is not only happy about that but gets a double bonus since he believes that he "stole" Ginn from his division rival according to Orr. I doubt that Bruce Arians was as "giddy" or at least tongue-in-cheek when he acquired Ginn, and we all know how that turned out.

I guess we'll see this coming season. Maybe everyone will turn out happy. I'm pretty sure the Panthers won't be losing any sleep. I kind of feel like Payton is gonna have some buyer's remorse once Ginn leaves some key catches on the ground and doesn't prove to be quite as capable as Cooks. And, I'm not gonna lie, that makes me grin.

Quite as capable as Cooks?  You're being kind.  Not even remotely CLOSE to being as capable as Cooks.

1000 yards seasons are overrated since fans will make a huge distinction between 990 yards and 1010 yards. I realize Ginn hasn't done either. However 10 td seasons are not overrated and neither is speed.

Shocked he didn't say "Ginn is extremely inconsistent and we regret this move immensely."

Yeah, but I never thought I'd see an article where anyone would think that they "stole" Ginn from anyone.

Sure, I get your point, but Ginn ain't the next best thing since sliced bread.

I'm almost laughing now. Bet you I'll be laughing in October, but maybe I'll be crying (though I seriously doubt it).

Ginn's biggest asset on the field is his ability to stretch the field and take the top off the defense. A big armed QB like Cam can take full advantage of that. Noodle armed Brees?

This is exactly why the Saints signing Brees surprised me. He just doesn't seem like a good fit for what they do. Guess we'll see.

    • Wanting that type of play and being okay with paying $55 million a season for it are two entirely different things. If Bryce were to become the same player Purdy has been, then he would surpass my expectations of him and I'd be okay with him as our QB of the future (and again, I've long been one of the bigger anti Bryce people here who doesn't think he is capable of being our long term solution). But in no world would I be okay with paying him THAT kind of money, paying an average starter elite money is just a terrible decision.
    • I don't think they can overcome that mistake. Hell Lance was a hiccup compared to this. He isn't going to be able to carry that price tag and now he is going to have to do just that. Lol. The NFL is so dumb sometimes.
    • So, one could say that T-Mac is quicker than someone of his size should be and while he might not be quite as fast as Evans in the 40, he's more athletic than Evans. If only someone, anyone, could have seen that in his tape and mentioned that on here, hmmmmmmm In all seriousness, hearing he tested in the 89th percentile in that drill at his size is crazy impressive.  Just tried to look up the times of the top WRs in the league right now, most don't show at time for that, but I did see Chase ran his in 7 seconds flat. I honestly don't know how true this is, but I do remember seeing one breakdown of his tape and the person said he has quiet and efficient feet.  That he's really good at using the minimal steps possible to make his cuts and because of that, it actually makes him look slower to the human eye because you don't see all the quick chop steps that the guys like Tyreek would use in their running. I'm still in a state of disbelief that he's a Panther and it might not fully hit me until week 1 and I see him out there making plays for us, still feels like Goodell is going to just be like, "YOU GOT PUNKED!!!  hahaha, he's a Cowboy now, suck it"
