Voth: Proehl didn't really push receivers

I know some people won't want to hear this but I personally believe Prohel was overrated. He was a player that did some great things as a player and I think that's why people think so highly of him. I mean Benjamin is really the only 1000 YD WR that we drafted under Prohel. Funchess and other WEa haven't improved that much under him and look at Lafell who basically became a 1000 yd receiver after he left here. You could argue the production has to do with our scheme but our WRs still can't seem to learn to run routes which in my opinion is part to do with the WR coach.

I think this speaks a lot... The star pupil on a team of this level often sets not just the bar, but the pace. Maybe Benjamin just needs a taste of someone else being the star pupil to bring that competitive spirit out in him.

Or maybe he'll fold under the pressures of high standards and can't bring himself to get motivated to get in shape, to be better and to put in ACTUAL effort on the field.

Tampa Bay invested a first and second round pick for Shula in consecutive years. They didn't pan out after decent rookie showings.

Sound familiar?

So where did they develop after Tampa? Also, Ted Ginn has been way better with Shula than anywhere else. As for KB and Funchess, the jury is still out, even though some here are already burying them.

Sure is a lot of money at stake for him. Not just this year's but possibly a whole career's worth.

This feels like the days when we wanted Cowher as our coach so he could be yelling and ranting at everyone.

That's not to say that being a hardass doesn't work. It just has to be done the right way because this is a league that has adults that get paid a lot of money. We've seen coaches that have tried a hardline approach and they flame out because the players simply tune them out.

Let's also not forget that sometimes, you have players that will never get it either because their work ethic isn't there or they have hit their ceiling on their potential. It happens and that's why we bring in new faces.

Yeah, the father figure gets thrown around, but what does that really mean? Everybody involved is a grown man and a professional. When is a man supposed to take responsibility for his life and waistline?

The drill sergeant approach does not work with grown men. Ben the military sure because in the military or breaking them down so they could build them back up.

This is football and we don't need to break the men down.

Players coach still knows how to push and motivate players regardless whether they're star pupils or just roll players.

I think, in today's NFL, the push these days has to come more from fellow players vs. coaches.

Cam, KB, Funch, Kalil, are all pretty laid back, funny guys...the only skill position player on O that looks and seems serious all the time is Olsen, and maybe Philly to an extent in the past.

There is a fine like there, Olsen is right on it, Smitty often took it too far.

I wouldn't mind seeing Cam up in these guys faces a little more often...but it's not really his style.

A coach has to be a lot of things:

- teacher

- leader

- motivator

- disciplinarian

Most guys are better at one or two of those than they are at the others.

That's why it's good when you can have an assistant position coach because their strengths can potentially complement each other. For example, a coach who's a good teacher might have an assistant who's a good disciplinarian, etc.

My issue with Benjamin is that if he can't push himself to stay in shape, no coach is going to be able to get out of him his full potential.

Not true. Some guys need tough love like Vernon Davis.
