With the glaring exception of cornerback Josh Norman, Dave Gettleman has taken care of the team’s young, deserving free agents since he became the Panthers’ general manager in 2013.

Cam Newton. Luke Kuechly. Kawann Short. All were signed to lucrative contract extensions that put them among the highest-paid players at their positions before they reached free agency. Turner, the team’s third-round pick in 2014 and a two-time Pro Bowler in the final year of his rookie contract, is next up.

The two sides have had preliminary conversations, according to league sources. But given the spending the past two offseasons at his position and his place among the top interior linemen in the league, locking up Turner for the long haul isn’t going to come cheap or easy.

Upper-echelon guards in the NFL still don’t make what their tackle-playing peers pull down. But the contracts given to Cleveland’s Kevin Zeitler (five years, $60 million in March) and Oakland’s Kelechi Osemele (five years, $58.5 million in 2016 helped narrow the gap).

He shouldn't get Turner money. Not by a long shot IMHO.

I mean, I like Norwell and want us to keep him, but I honestly think some other guys already on the roster can hold down LG down the road.

People always doubt that we'll extend any player long term. It literally happens with every player the Panthers might extend when their contracts near their ends.

Based on the recent contracts out there, I think Trai will get 5 years for $55-60 million, and Norwell will Get 5 year - $40-45 million. I really hope that we find a way to lock them both down. 

Interesting fact that I just learned about Franchise tags: "The Panthers could use the franchise tag on Turner, although that seems unlikely because there is not a specific tag value for guards. So Turner would receive the average of the top five salaries for all offensive linemen, which this year was $14.27 million."

Tackle play this season will greatly impact how much money is going to be offered to Turner and Norwell. If our tackles don't hold the fort as well as we hope, then those top rate, experienced guards are going to deserve more money to shore up the line. If the Kalil/Williams/Oher/Moton tackles hold up or even excel, that's going to drive the need and dollars down for the guards.

As much as those two guys are great at what they do, the old NFL mantra is that you can always find and train more guards.

Sure would be nice to see Cam behind an O-line full of Pro-bowlers, though. It might very well be worth every penny.

Not doubting you, but the only real candidates would be Trai and Star...

I doubt we tag a DT two years in a row, and I would hope we could get Trai for the $11 Mil a year range... Franchise OL in 2018 will probably be around at least $15 Mil a year...

There's no way Norwell is worth $15 Mil a year. We could have two of him for that price. If he won't sign for $7 - $8 Mil a year, then let him go elsewhere for his payday.

no chance a deal gets done this summer?

I'd rather do one now then wait another season, or two more seasons. Guard money is already edging toward insanity.

      Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.

      I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.

      From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
