OTA observations Day 9

This was the most competitive of the Panthers' nine OTA sessions. The "spirits" started rising in the opening team drill when running back Cameron Artis-Payneicon-article-link.gif bounced around the left side before sprinting down a wide-open sideline.

Seems like the defense dominated the day for the most part. And they keep mentioning Shaq is doing well in coverage ..

At this point I could care less about offseason hero devin funchess. I'll not say much about him until I see him not be a ghost on NFL Sundays.

Hahaha

> No. 1 wasn't done talking, of course. When wide receiver Devin Funchessicon-article-link.gif lined up across from cornerback Captain Munnerlyn, Newton noticed the mismatch: "You've got a baby on you, Fun." Funchess, who is seven inches taller than Munnerlyn, backed up Newton's words with a short reception from Anderson.

James Bradberryicon-article-link.gif, who fractured his wrist Monday, remained limited. On Tuesday, the second-year cornerback said he hoped to get his cast signed by Luke Kuechlyicon-article-link.gif. Not only did Bradberry land 59's signature, but he also got Newton's. "I may sell it once it comes off," Bradberry joked.

I'd pay big bucks for that sweaty cast. This kid is going to be one of the best in the league soon.

That had to feel good after the comments from last year.

  • Undrafted receiver Austin Dukeicon-article-link.gif continues to make plays. On Wednesday, he again showcased his quickness when he caught a pass in the middle of the field before spinning past Zack Sanchezicon-article-link.gif for what would have been a long gain.

This kid is putting together a highlight reel during OTA's. I can't wait to see him in actual game situations.

Agreed, but I'm also hoping he's for real and not one of those guys who disappears once the pads go on.

    • I'm not too familiar with Chenal so this might be a lazy question..... Would a Chenal signing be any similar to us giving Turk a big contract? An under appreciated fringe starter in KC that teammates and front offices love and envision them taking off in a new city.
    • I LOOOOVED Nick Emmanwori in last year's draft and seeing him thrive and become an instant leader of Seattle's defense this year makes me want a similar rookie beside Moehrig.  In scanning this year's draft, I came across Zakee Wheatley from PSU. Not exactly the same build, but Senior Bowl measurements have him at a hair under 6'3" & 200lbs and runs a 4.4. His acceleration, ability to span the field and be a true center field coverage safety would allow Moehrig to float more near the LOS and play to his strengths with a worthy compliment. Wheatley is a modern day lengthy SAF and he excels in zone coverage, isn't afraid to get dirty in the run game and has a nose for the ball.  We play such a soft cover-3 scheme that having someone with speed to roam would be great. I'd especially like to see us roll Ransom out there with these two as well with Horn/Jackson to secure that backend for us. Looking like a R2 pick as of now with some saying early third. If he truly is an athletic specimen that his numbers show, I assume he will only climb higher after the combine.  https://bleacherreport.com/articles/25250463-nfl-draft-2026-scouting-report-penn-state-s-zakee-wheatley Will defnitely look to see how he does at the Sr. Bowl this weekend and in Indy next month.
    • Yeah, I can see that too. Sticky, reliable hands that does not drop a lot of balls and runs the whole route tree.
