our biggest mistake in the past 10 years

That doesn't mean diddy squat. Norwell isn't exactly 'normal'. What? Are we supposed to let him go too? Norman was no different than Hardy either. Yet, this place threw a massive hissyfit when we rescinded the tag.

Every team has a loose screw.

Did multiple members of the organization have multiple conversations with Norman regarding his concerning off-field behavior and the types of people he was surrounding himself with like they did Hardy?

No one knew Hardy would have the type of incident he ended up having, but to act as if there were zero concerns about him is simply revisionist history. There were plenty of signs that the Panthers had significant off-field concerns about Hardy and it played a big role in why he was franchised instead of given a long-term contract. Franchising him spared us long-term cap damage, but it still resulted in a big time PR hit.

I still think Everett Brown and Armanti Edwards were bigger mistakes, but in hindsight, it's obvious that the Panthers should've went with their gut and simply parted ways with Greg Hardy.

Our biggest mistake was not getting a legit playmaker at receiver opposite Smitty for several years. Sure, we half-assed it with the likes of Jarrett and Colbert, etc., but we never got it done and the window to maximize Smitty closed.

I'd say Muhsin Muhammad was a pretty solid playmaker across from Smitty.

You cant always have pro bowlers at every position.

Yeah but after the couple years he was with Smith, we hardly put forth the effort or coaching to produce another #2. Smith was here 13 seasons. Moose was here in Smith's prime for 3 (one of which Smith was hurt) and the last 2 years of Moose's career here, Moose was on the downside of his career, but only brought back because of our poor effort to produce a #2. So even if you want to count all of the years Moose and Smith were together, good or bad, that's 8 years worth of not having another legit #2. Pretty terrible.

The biggest mistake was trading a first round pick to draft Everette Brown.

Bingo.  He was an undersized player that didn't fit our scheme but Hurney had to Hurney. I guess Peppers going away got Hurney in desperate mode.

Then there's the whole Armanti Edwards trade too.

drafting Kerry Collins drunk ass.

Not firing John Fox Sooner.

Trading 3 picks for Devin Funchess at 41 is so much worse than Dwayne Jarrett at 45.

When you look at the drafts, the Panthers traded down in 2007 to obtain more picks. They traded their 1st and 6th round picks for a 1st, 2nd, and 5th. The Panthers traded away a 2nd, 3rd, and 6th round pick for Funchess. The Panthers got Beason, Kalil, C.Johnson, and Jarrett in the first 3 rounds of the 2007 draft. The Panthers got Thompson and Funchess in the first 3 round of the 2015 draft. In both years, the Panthers started with 3 picks in the first 3 rounds.

So, Jarrett did not leverage the team in that draft as much as Funchess did in 2015.

Not to mention the Smith, Hardy, and Norman debacles had a much greater negative impact on the Panthers than drafting Jarrett in the 2nd round after obtaining an extra 2nd round pick.

I will never understand why so many people turn a blind eye to all the embarrassing moves in the Gettleman era. The list is extensive with 5 off seasons under his belt.

Jerry Richardson was not going to give a 1st round contract to a rookie in 2009 or 2010 leading up to the CBA negotiations. Everyone who followed the team back then knew the Panthers had ZERO intention of signing a 1st round pick.

This was not a front office decision. This was an ownership decision. 2008 was the last hoorah for spending money until 2011. The Panthers did not even attempt to get rid of John Fox following the 2009 season. Ownership was not paying out any big money until the CBA was done.
