OLB Question..

The Huddler

Recommended Posts

Since we play base Nickel Defense most of the time, I pose a question that I want answered Honestly. Talking about the OLB spot that Shaq and TD both play...

...are we better off on the field and financially letting TD walk after this season?

I think so IMO. I love me TD but i love the Panthers more. At this point I think Shaq is straight up the better football player.

It would make sense to me to have Shaq play 100% of the LB snaps..

why even extend TD unless for a cheap backup role?

My gut is telling me that thats what Gettkeman was thinking too. And thats the straw that broke JRs emotionally fragile back so to speak.

What are youre thoughts?

Shaq has yet to beat Davis for a starting spot, so that should answer you question. Actually Shaq had trouble beating Klein for a rotational spot.

Shaq plays a different position than Klein, sir.

I am with you. TD, this is your final year starting. Here is a salary for a modest 2 years of backup  $$$ or we're done

This should be TD's last year starting imho. Shaq Thompson has shown up, and we need to let our first round pick from 2015 on the field more often.

The fact that Richardson is adverse to that is mind-boggling.

Its only rumor and speculation that he is adverse to it.

This seems to be the prevailing mindset around this place lately.  Are we talking about the same TD that played statically (short about 3 sacks) the same as he did in 2015? Probowl level TD?

I'm all for replacing with younger talent, but if there isn't a drop off then why? Just because he is younger doesn't make him better.  If we were talking about Tolbert, yes, we all saw the drop off.  But Thomas $%%#$$ Davis!?

Shaq had no trouble beating Klein for the third LB spot last year, evidenced by him starting in the base 4-3 as opposed to AJ.

Forgive my lack of knowledge on the proper verbiage, and not trying to be a grammer hammer, just making sure I got it straight and have thought a similar question...

I thought OLB was outside LB in 3-4..?

4-3 uses a Will, Mike & Sam, weak side, middle & strong side, respectively, correct?

TD is the Will & Shaq is Sam, yes? What about them simply switching? Will has to cover more ground, yes? Give Shaq the heavier coverage duties...

He converted all 13 of his field goal tries with a 100% conversion rate that led all FBS kickers with at least 12 attempts. Fitzgerald was also perfect on his 14 extra points. He will compete with Matthew Wright for the Panthers’ kicking job in training camp. Harrison-Hunte went undrafted despite a strong showing at the Combine. He’s an older prospect who will turn 25 by the start of his rookie year, but he had just one season of sustained production at SMU after five years at Miami. Still, he earned first-team All-ACC honors in 2024 with 8.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks and will push for a roster spot in Carolina as an athletic interior disruptor.   more at the link https://www.profootballrumors.com/2025/05/panthers-sign-19-undrafted-free-agents
