Winter is coming

Someone with ties to the Panthers told me two years ago that I should not get use to Dave being here. I laughed and said man that's crazy he has been rebuilding our team and managing the cap as well as possible. My friend then said that JR has no long term plans for Dave. He needs someone to get him out of the hole he dug and when he's done he will replace him with Bene. I said I guess winter is coming huh? We laughed, and I blew it off as a rumor. Well folks winter has came and it's worse than Brandon Bene. We have Hurney back and his white walkers are putting darkness where there's light. Seems this was the plan all along. Sometimes owners can't get out of the way of there own egos. I have some more rumors he gave me and we will see if they become true as well.

Well if JR was planning all along to get rid of dave then why let beane walk??? JR is acting very much against the panther's intrests especially by bringing back hurney who has no business being a GM in the first place..

Just speculation but I think Bene wanted to be a real GM not a yes man. I heard the reason Morrison left was because he was being micromanaged as well.

Playing devils advocate here.....what if Beane had no intention of taking a job under a meddlesome owner?

Go ahead and post the rest...will be fun to look back in a couple years when we can't afford to pay any of our young talent.

Yeah I think you guys are right.. JR just wants a bitchboy to do what he's told and to give the vets whatever they want.. Just when we think the franchise has finally made it to the top and stays there.. this happens.

Yep, post up the rest.

On the surface it all makes sense. Given Gettleman's age when he was hired it certainly felt like he was being brought in to fix the mess and keep the seat warm for Beane.

That was all going swimmingly until this offseason when Beane left for Buffalo, Gettleman gets fired out of the blue, and the original conductor of the mess was brought back to lead the band. You couldn't make up a more ridiculous story. This is like an article about NFL management written by The Onion.

You know, I've been looking at some timelines and this makes a ton of sense.

  • 2002: Hurney promoted to GM, hires John Fox and Dan Henning (Fox chose Jack Del Rio)
  • 2003 - 2008: 63-49 record, including 3 good runs in the playoffs and a Superbowl appearance.  Semi-regular signings of high quality Free Agents. Some decent drafts, consistently hits on first round selections and about half of his other selections get good playing time.  First of Hurney's big Draft Day trades happens in 2008, where we grab Jeff Otah.  That team goes 12-4 and gets upset at home in the playoffs by Arizona.
  • 2009: JR gets a heart transplant.  Fires sons.  Julius Peppers makes it clear he's no longer playing in Carolina.  Hurney makes a stupid trade for Everett Brown in a panic move to try and replace Peppers.  In the labor negotiations, JR is front and center for the Owners.
  • 2010: JR/Hurney refuse to give Fox an extension.  Hurney drafts Jimmy Clausen and trades up to third to draft local hero Armanti Edwards. Peppers is in Chicago and Brown is overmatched in the NFL.  Team all but quits on the coaching staff and Panthers go 2-14.
  • 2011:  Hurney hires Ron Rivera.  Rivera allowed to choose his coordinators.  DeAngelo Williams gets a 5-year $43,000,000 contract.  Charles Johnson gets a 6 year $76,000,000 contract (after flirting with Atlanta).  Hurney drafts Cam Newton after JR vets him extensively.
  • 2012: Jonathan Stewart gets a 5 year, $36,500,000 contract. Hurney drafts Luke Keuchly.  Panthers, in cap hell, start 1-5 and hit the bye week.  Richardson fires Hurney and lets Beane finish the season as interim GM.
  • 2013-2016: Gettleman gets a lot of autonomy and makes some difficult (and some potentially stupid) cuts, gets our cap back under control.
  • 2017: JR, apparently tired of Gettleman's autonomy, fires him and hires Hurney as the interim GM.

Question: Who was our actual GM from 2009-2012?  You have Hurney from 2002-2008 giving out fairly normal contracts and signing quality Free Agents.  But once Fox was on his way out, it's like Hurney was a completely different guy.

I can see JR coming back from his heart surgery and thinking that he doesn't have a lot of time left so he better take charge.  Hurney goes from GM to yes-man, and everything falls apart.  DG comes in and fixes that mess, and now JR has Hurney back to do his bidding.  Complaints of micromanaging make perfect sense in that context, as does Morrison quitting and Beane bolting for Buffalo.

Still love the Panthers though.  Hope Rivera can get it done this year or next, before the coming craziness emerges.
