At this point the only thing out the window is number 1 seed. Everything else is up for grabs. Panthers need to win out and they could very well end up with the #2 seed.

Unlikely but not out.  Foles led Eagles would have to lose to the Giants, Raiders, and Cowboys.

There is a scenario I just played out in the playoff machine on ESPN that has us the 2nd seed with a win week 17. and out of the playoffs entirely with a loss.

Yep. That scenario involves the following:

Rams, Seahawks, Saints, Falcons, and Panthers all being tied at 11-5. In that scenario the falcons and Seahawks win their divisions, the saints are the five seed and the rams edge us out for the six seed.

We become the 2nd team in modern football to miss the playoffs at 11-5.

We really need to pull for the rams this Sunday to take control of their division as well as the Bucs to pull off a stunner at home against the falcons.

We also of course have to take care of Green Bay.

New York Times has a Playoff Simulator. If the Panthers win the next three games, here are our odds.

#1 Seed - 3% Chance
#2 Seed - 60% Chance
#3 Seed - 6% Chance
#4 Seed - 6% Chance
#5 Seed - 25% Chance
#6 Seed - >1% Chance

In the scenario I mentioned above, if we win weeks 15 and 16, Atlanta wins out, Saints only lose to Atlanta, and Seattle wins out, Then we miss the playoffs. If we beat Atlanta, then we are the 2 seed.

i just tried your scenario here and the only thing you guys are leaving out is that Minnesota needs to take a loss somewhere too. if they win out and the eagles win out, then those two are the #1 and #2. them winning or losing has no bearing on the possible lose-and-go-home the Panthers will face in week 17, but we need the Vikings to lose another game if we hope to have a chance at that 2 seed.

if they do, and everything else goes the way you say, then yes... the Panthers will be playing a game where a win nets them #2 and a loss sends them home until August.

i for one can only say, fug that poo.

I knew there was something I was forgetting.

as another interesting note... here are the games that seem to have the most effect on this final seeding (outside of the Panthers losing to GB/TB):

- Week 15: Rams @ Seahawks, Jets @ Saints -> a Rams win here would throw a wrench in the w17 scenario. So would the Jets upsetting the hobbled Saints. dont laugh, that could really happen. if either result happens, we would sneak in as the 6th seed.

- Week 16: Rams @ Titans, Seahawks @ Cowboys, Falcons @ Saints -> if the home team wins in any one of those matchups, the Panthers would sneak in as the 6th seed in w17 with a loss to ATL.

- Week 17: the game that would have the greatest bearing on our playoff spot is our own. we just need to take care of business in ATL to punch a ticket. losing puts us in a precarious position of needing other GOOD teams in the NFC to lose to inferior opponents, at home in many cases, for us to still make the playoffs.

as i said before. F*ck all that shiz. if im the Panthers, i know that our playoff destiny is in our own hands. one game at a time, one win at a time. we win out, we are in. win out and have the Saints lose in the process? Division winners. This week, if im the Panthers, im thinking only about Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. there's a reason that team had to go to overtime against the WINLESS AFTER 14 GAMES Cleveland Browns. We can win, and we need to focus solely on doing that. once that win is secured, we focus only on Crab Legs and the Butt Pirates. Once that win is secured, we give all we have to put the 28-3's in their place.

(I would love nothing more than to kick ATL out of the playoffs by beating them in their new butthole dome by a score of 28-3, preferrably on a Matt Ryan pick right as they are trying to score a garbage time TD to avoid said final score)

    • You literally did it right there and didn't even remember it. Sorry long Friday.
    • TMac to finish up Feels good after pads came on. Physicality is a little different, playstyle is a little different. Refs let the players play, so he has to earn his stripes to get calls and just has to be better playing through contact. Focusing on staying confident and listening to coaches. Not much has changed for him, still trying to be his authentic self. Was asked about boxing practice he was seen doing. He's done that since he was a kid because his dad was a boxer and taught his siblings. Was the youngest and got beat up the most, but now he's the fourth of sixth children. Boxing helps with his cardio and being reactive with his hands to the ball + DB. Admits to struggling the first couple of days, hats off to the DB corps for making him better every single day but had his best day on Wednesday. Even the best get got. Just have to remain confident in preparation and abilities. Confidence will take you only so far, and that's where his resilience plays a factor. XL is authentic and great to have in the room. Can rely on him to be the same guy every day. They make each other better. Everybody feeds off of each other and when one person wins they all win. Happy to be a part of the receiver room. Was asked about how he was laughing harder than everybody else at XL getting his feet in the water off the back of the boat: "Man he needs to be stopped bro... He can't be serious but he was serious. It's all good." Playing against the increased amount of press he's facing in practice is helping him get more physical. His job is to catch the ball, so if it touches his hand he has to come down with it. Only catches with one hand if he needs to, but that gives the QB a bigger catch radius. Had a pregame routine where he did a 360 one-handed catch, but doesn't do it anymore. Working on being a pro: Getting into the facility early and getting treatment, eating better, etc. Just wants to win re: rookie goals. Anything he can do to help the team win. "I'm looking for to the season man and keep pounding."
    • DJ Wonnum up next Felt the defense came out ready to work at all levels and took over practice. New standard around here. Young guys have to know they're coming in to work. Last year was not the standard. Nic and Princely are fun. Different personalities but loves what they bring to the room. Sky is the limit for them. Nic sits next to Wonnum, Princeley sits next to Jones II. Allows them to be better mentors. Feels great and ready to go Incoom's athleticism allows him to bend and get low even to compensate for not being the biggest guy. Can set the edge. EDGE guys are helped when the ILBs can get home because it allows them to be a little more free while still in scheme. DB being back means his dominance is back. Can set the edge from the 3 or wherever he's at to make the runs bounce to the EDGE guys. Winning mentality and standard this year. Championship level from practice to how you live off of the field. Accept greatness and excellence with guys wanting to come to work every day. Not settling for anything less. Been in guys' shoes that are fighting for roster spots so he knows how to address them. Remembers not knowing what's next, especially as a rookie. Have a clear mind and ask the older guys a lot of questions. Has a good relationship already with Pat Jones II due to knowing each other and talking football all of the time. Can make hand gestures and know immediately what to adjust. Taking care of his body and excited to start the season. Getting it acclimated to football again by being able to tackle and bring players to the ground. Didn't know they were playing live tomorrow. Don't tell me it'll be "thud." Browns next week will allow them to hit somebody else and get a feel of what a different team is doing. Also allows the team to see where they're at on offense and defense. Ready to play football. Not worried about the QB matchup for Cleveland, going to play hard regardless of who is back there.
