Jay Glazer is reporting that up to half the teams in the league may be looking for a new head coach next year. Lots of them are currently unsatisfied with their team performance and might be thinking a change would do some good (we'll know whether or not that pans out in about a week).

And that may be good news for Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula.

A lot could depend on the Panthers playoff performance, of course. But if you're thinking that an early exit would be a bad thing for him, it might actually be just the opposite..

Teams looking for a new head coach are notoriously impatient. It's a sad truth that coordinators of Super Bowl teams often find themselves on the outside looking in. The league has made adjustments for that, but all too often it's still true.

For that reason, if the Panthers were to make an early exit, it could be an advantage in that it would free up Shula to do interviews and take a job as soon as possible.

The bad news: Shula is not on the NFL's annual list of recommended candidates for head coaching positions. Steve Wilks is, but Shula's not. Still, the Shula name carries some weight, and not being on the list doesn't guarantee that you won't get a shot any more than being on the list guarantees that you will.

The current turmoil with Panthers ownership might also motivate Shula to want to leave more than he has in the past. Even for good teams, ownership change is fraught with uncertainty. Shula might see this as a good time to get out of Dodge (and he might be right, who knows?)

Pure speculation on my part: The Lions could be interesting. There's reportedly some dissatisfaction with Jim Caldwell after watching this season collapse despite a team that looked promising. Plus the Lions have an established quarterback, and for whatever fans think of him, there are some in the league who look very favorably on his work with Cam Newton. Of course, the Lions also have Jim Bob Cooter but he may want to look at opportunities somewhere else.

If this mass purge does happen, the attrition Glazer is talking  about would actually mean several good offensive coaches could be available as well. Dirk Koetter and Hue Jackson are possible, among others.

We'll know within the next few weeks, but for now the change that many have been looking for might actually be ready to happen.

We'll see.

We can only hope.  I think Shula might be a better head coach this time around than when he was with the Bucs.

      Rico is 0%. I think we would really like to have Mays back but we have a value in mind and aren't willing to overspend. I think someone probably will so I think the odds are pretty low but not zero.

      Damn I liked A'Shawn too. This is basically a heads up we're planning on cutting you move.  Robinson wasn't the best but I loved his attitude and effort on the field. He held that entire dline together when Brown went down iirc..granted we finished that season as the worst rushing defense in modern NFL history.  If Wharton would have performed up to atleast half of his salary last season, I'd feel a little better about it. We do need that cap space though.

      13. Carolina is coming. The Panthers are well thought of around the league. Their "process" seems sound. I think their off-season will be very interesting to keep an eye on. They made the playoffs, but they're not yet knocking on the door. (Offense was 26th in EPA/play.) I think it's imperative they don't overestimate where they are in their build. They can't throw a ton of money around in FA to "make a run now". They need to be intentional about building a solid foundation. (IMO) And from what I know about the team... I think they will be. Sidenote: I have my eye on offense there, not defense. They HAVE to leave next season with a strong opinion on Bryce Young. They need to put pieces around him to do that. Can't be left wondering what he would have looked like with "better OL play" or "more pass catchers". They have to know. (That part is purely my opinion.
