I want to know how the Rooney rule has been, or will be satisfied.

Does it apply to coordinators?

Ron said they had a couple, few candidates in mind. Did he just wake up at 3am and go, "I wonder if I can convince Norv to come back? I'll dial him up on the rotary phone and ask him at 5am when he's finishing his breakfast."

And then Norv is like, yeah I can come back and work with all the other members of my family. Make my son the QB coach, my nephew the assistant QB coach, my brother a consultant, it'll be fun. After all, you've got a family oriented organization down there.

And so Ron goes running into Hurney's office at 730am this morning and is like, "You'll never guess who I just got off the phone with!" And with his super boner, he fires Shula and quickly jots down a few other names for the OC position, oddly enough 3 of them have the same last name as Norv....

Then calls the press conference, and here we are.

There were never any other candidates for real.

The Rooney Rule only applies to head coaching and senior level front office positions. Exactly how a "senior level" front office position is determined I don't know.

Never ceases to amaze me the lack of basic intellect in people.

Yall can nitpick this all you want, but he is a well respected Offensive Coordinator. heck he's been a head coach 3 times because of that. I'd say he's a huge upgrade over Shula and I've been wanting him for a while.

Exactly. He's had three head coaching jobs in the NFL and 15 total years as a HC, with those hirings coming due to his success as a coordinator. Mike Shula has never had a sniff of interest as a head coach. Norv isn't my preferred OC, but he's wayyyyy better than Shula and will help this offense and Cam improve.

Gonna make a prediction now because all my instincts are telling me it's going to happen.

Hiring Norv Turner will be the decision that will ultimately cost Ron Rivera his job as head coach of the Carolina Panthers.

Lol..im going the other way...this may solidify his place in panther history and a job for as long as he wants it ...this will be a great hire...

No need to be rude about it. I am on a Panthers fan forum at 1130pm, having slept 4 hours in the past 36 hours. I was making a comment on how this seems very obvious to me that Norv was the only real target all along. And until recently I had never heard of the Rooney rule, it has come up often in these coaching conversations so I made a comment about it. Sheesh.

Per the article;

"Norv Turner was regarded as one of the NFL’s most respected offensive minds during 31 seasons in the league. He compiled a 114-122-1 record in 15 years as head coach of the Chargers, Redskins and Raiders. Turner’s clubs made four playoff appearances, with his 2007 Chargers squad making the AFC championship game."

umm, and how isn't this an upgrade over Shula again?!

When has anyone said these things about the dearly departed Shula?

Never.

He’ll be workin a flat top grill trying to master the medium/medium-rare temps of Papa Don’s meat market.

    • Dave in a presser gassed up Anthony Tyus III and dying to see him on the field.  I mean 3 is all that needed right, and Dan loves etienne. He's one year filling in his body. If brooks is back, toss in chubba, thats 3.
    • After seeing hits in the last two UDFA pools, I do not in this group sorta of a let down after I gassed myself up.  Not like I know of their games, but just expected more. The duke DT only has to beat out hunte (2025 UDFA) or Ray (DL coach's kid) or even Cam Jackson mid 2025 5th.  I thought they would bring in more edges, IOL, TEs, etc...
    • My 2 favorite picks, since you didn't ask? 3. Brazzell II.  A 1000 yard WR with 4.37 speed and checks all the boxes for a Z Wide Receiver.  IN THE THIRD ROUND!!! 5.  Sam Hecht.  I think he will take over as the starter at some point this season and never look back.  IN THE FIFTH ROUND. Runner Up:  2. Hunter:  We were targeting a DT early in this draft because we did very little to replace Robinson in free agency.  Hunter was our guy and he will start. In addition to that, you got a starting tackle that should man one side of the new OL we will build for Bryce's second contract. A starting WR, offensive lineman, defensive lineman and possible Offensive tackle (at some point during this year from this draft will start.  UNREAL. In addition, I don't doubt that Wheatley (5th round) takes the FS job by next year and Lee III is Jackson's replacement in 2027.   Finally, even Kuwatch should be a special teams demon and LB depth.   Last year's draft was so good it was ugly.  This one will turn out to be uglier.  No offense Basbear--this ain't about you.
