I remember a story from an old, retired Major League Baseball umpire who was talking about players he liked and hated.  One of the ones he absolutely, unequivocally hated was Larry Bowa.

He told a story about there being a huge collision once at the plate that kicked up a loud of dust as well as actually knocking him down and leaving him disoriented.  He confessed that he never actually saw what happened on the play because of all the confusion.  All he knew was that someone kept yelling "Come on, Ump!  Am I safe or am I out?"  He asked "Who's yelling?" Someone answered "Bowa".

He said "You're out!"

I agree that the NFL isn't rigged, but could stuff like this happen in football?

Yeah, probably.

I believe refs let Cam have it hard....in part because he outed what Ed said to him.  Also I think they don’t like his flare.  In addition to just him being so freaky big they overlook stuff.

I don’t think it is all a big conspiracy or they all intentionally do it. But I think many have a built in bias about how they have dealt with Cam.

I agree that this is the most likely scenario. I do believe they nudge games through bias, even subconsciously. They are also most often older and stubborn old men. So if you bitch them out for being wrong they’ll likely continue to make ignorant calls all game.

The way fix it is to allow coaches to challenge penalties. It’s the only way the game becomes truly fair. You’d have to expect offensive line holding. But sht like PI, OPI, offsides and false start, and blows to the head should be challengeable.

I do agree with I think it is Belichick that says they should get 3 challenges.  Anything is fair game.

I don't think that the NFL is rigged necessarily, but it suffers from huge referee biases.

Remember a few years back, that ref that posted a picture of himself on Facebook with Saints gear on before a game and people complained and he was taken off that officiating team?

Why do we delude ourselves into believing that these human referees can be 100% impartial?! No one wants to be the guy who stops a Tom Brady comeback, even if his receivers aren't really getting held, and his offensive linemen are practically dragging the defensive line around by their jerseys.

The Jags were the better team, but they were penalized into submission early, started playing more tentatively and that's when Brady and Co. knew they could capitalize on it.

If you're going to call every little thing, make sure you apply that mentality to both teams. Refs don't, they clearly have favorites from game to game. And why wouldn't they?! They're human beings. We can microchip ANYTHING now. The spot of the ball, forward progress, crossing the goal line, etc. should be determined by machines, not some semi-retired lawyer on HGH. You're telling me we need the ref to eyeball the spot of the ball and then pull out an index card? GTFOH

To be fair, the Saints ref was a replacement official.

(and apparently, a moron)

Just because I find America's tin hat amusing, this is a great example of how a still photo can be misleading without context.

Actually watching it unfold it becomes clear what actually happened: the refs were breaking up a scuffle, then this official instinctually tried to separate what he thought was a Pat running in to headbutt a Jag until he realized that it was just Fleming exuberantly embracing his own teammate in celebration and it caused him to laugh while he was "breaking them up".

There's also this...

One of the first people to congratulate Brady after the championship game was a ref

I don't believe the NFL is rigged. That said, this isn't a good look.

The league has always wanted refs to keep a professional distance from players and coaches, and I agree with that idea.

Stuff like this undermines it and gives people a reason to pull out their tinfoil hats.

I really don't think Goodell cares. I don't think all game are rigged because you really can't rig all games. I do however feel they are nudged and have even been nudged in Carolinas favor before.
