Say what you want about Rivera, he's a no-nonsense leader

I never heard this story about the hazing (via USA Today via Charlotte Observer's Tom Sorensen) : 

"During his first season as head coach of the Carolina Panthers, he saw a rookie tied up and repeatedly dipped into cold water. What would happen, Rivera wondered, if the ropes didn’t hold? Rivera ordered the rookie freed."

I always thought that I had a good feel for the type of person and coach that Rivera is,  and this reaffirms my opinion.  But,  on the flip side,  what in the hell was John Fox doing?  

Hazing: It is what it is, and it sucks.  I would have never thought that hazing to that degree would go on in this organization. But,  then again,  the boys-will-be-boys philosophy extended it's tentacles in uglier ways here,  so...

Nobody has ever questioned that Rivera is a stand up guy.

His skills as a coach, and especially his skills at personnel evaluation are another story.

His character, though?  No question about that.  He's the kind of guy you can hope will succeed whether you believe he will or not.

Ehh...this story is cool but I think Ron's rep as some disciplinarian is a myth.  The players respect him because he was a former player himself, but I've seen too many instances of them clowning and wasting valuable time or committing dumb penalties in his tenure to think that he's some stern leader. Benching Cam over the tie was a charade and the media ate it up.

I've never heard anyone call Ron a disciplinarian. If anything his rep falls on the "player's coach" side of the spectrum.

We were the least penalized team in the NFL this year. 5th least last year.

He was something of a disciplinarian as a DC, and he came in to Charlotte acting like he was going to be a disciplinarian, but that fell apart quick.

I get why he went to players asking for advice and all (that was the big story prior to the Super Bowl) but I think doing that cost him some of his authority.

More about the type and timing of the penalties than the number IMO. And the team dances after every first down practically, which I don't have a problem with but that's the opposite of "no nonsense" .

I remember going to training camp when Beason was a rookie and the vets taped all of the rookies to the goalpost and dumped em with Gatorade in front of the fans.  Haven't been in a few years, does that still happen under Rivera?

I'm not sure how much respect he actually has in the locker room.  A coach who has never admitted fault for his teams repeatedly showing up undisciplined and unprepared but blaming it on "missed opportunities" and "execution" probably isn't too popular with players.
