Worley to safety?

Might as well just make a separate thread for this.

IMO, Worley struggles in coverage on an island at CB. He just doesn't seem to have the speed and hips to stick with WRs and plays well off the line to try to avoid getting beat deep. However, he is a very sound tackler. Possibly the best tackler in our secondary. When you look at his skills and his build (6'1" 205), it screams safety to me. Evidently, there was a decent amount of speculation about this pre-draft.

Now, to be fair, I've heard absolutely nothing suggesting that the staff is even considering this, but hell, it's the offseason. Gotta talk about something.

A move to a defense that employs more press and trail technique should benefit him and teams looking for range and instincts could try him at free safety.

Standing in at 6-foot-1, 204 pounds, Worley looked more like a safety than cornerback at the Combine, clocking in with 4.64 speed. Worley does have excellent movement ability and ball skills.

Evidently he was considered a safety recruit coming out of high school.

We have to do something about Kurt Coleman.  He should not be starting at saftey and ideally not even on the team after the abomination of terrible saftey play he had for the past 2 seasons and especially this past season. He's constantly out of position, getting burned down the field , getting juked, turned around , trucked, you name it.

I'd be all for trying Worely there. At least that would mean we're trying to solve the problem instead of just letting it fester.

If I were GM I'd cut Coleman, use Adams as depth. Draft a saftey, and either get a saftey in free agency or move worely to Saftey and get a  vet CB in free agency.

I would like to see this happen. I also think we should resign Byrd (the safety) for cheap as good depth. He came in mid season and seemed to do ok. I thought Gunter looked good for depth at CB in the limited action he saw. Should both come super cheap and Worley’s potential at safety would help our secondary and keep our salary cap space open. Would still need another starter at CB and maybe a project safety late in the draft and I would be very happy!

Let Derwin James fall to us (or draft Ronnie Harrison), give Worley a shot at safety, keep Adams and Byrd, sign Amukamara in FA. Cut Coleman.

Badabing badabung

This idea is on the right track, IMO. Draft a young safety, move Worley, and bring in another corner. I appreciate what Coleman did for us in 2015, but he was flat-out awful in key moments this past season (Julio drop, Ginn playoff TD, etc. etc. etc.).

Heck, while we’re at it, make the corner signing JNo24!

All season long I’ve been making this suggestion in numerous threads but only saw maybe one reply during the year.  I was beginning to think I was the only person on this board who thought this could be good move.

I believe Gettleman said Worley led the NCAA in interceptions during his last year in college. He’s also a good tackler. Since his speed for the corner position isn’t great, it only seems logical to put him in a position where he can see things develop, help out on double teams, and become more of ballhawk.

If it worked, this would allow the team to upgrade the corner spot via the draft and FA. Also, we’ll hopefully have Corn Elder return from injury. If Worley isn’t in the mix he’d see the field more in 2018

I’ve been more about drafting a Corner first round but we need a safety. Worley could fill that need, I wonder how the team feels about it.

which positions have longer adjustment period for rookies? Seems like for immediate impact we would  need some experience in the secondary...

    • I've been hearing all about this "winning culture" for years while watching us piss away top shelf draft position with meaningless late season wins when we're already eliminated from the playoffs but being assured this is building "winning culture" just to inevitably suck again next year. With that said, I'll always take a playoff berth. Just make the dance and you have a chance to make some noise. But spare me the "winning culture" bullshit.
    • Winning culture trumps ALL.    Here’s my way to long take:  Last season this team started out breaking the sports books and being the lead pipe lock of the week. They finished by being a tough out for both SB teams.  I don’t think they’ll pick up right where they left off, but for the first time in years they’re on the legitimate upswing. Honest to God NFL talent has been infused.  Offense is already going to be good for 2-3 more 3rd down conversions (I don’t think anyone will argue that) a game over last year so I’ll go (very optimistically) 5-6 more points better than last year’s team. ADDED: A legit backup RB and a money WR who catches everything, along with 2 promising rooks. No significant losses (sorry Miles). KEYS: Can Dave bob and weave play calling if things aren’t working? Does protection continue to hold for Bryce. Did this team pick up dudes who know how to find the end zone or will the struggle of 3rd and goal continue.  Defense. If they can force even 2 (hopefully 3) more stops a game on third down (not asking a lot, hopefully more), that’s good for -4 (optimistic) points for opposing teams.  ADDED: legit run stuffers. Legit (appearing) edge guys. LOST: Clowney. Question: With legit 3-4 talent can Evero finally show what we have been VERY patiently waiting on? To me, EVERYTHING on defense hinges on Evero. Everything. Every position group was upgraded (still not good enough, but certainly improved).  Losing Brown early and Luvu… completely and utterly devastated the run defense. Luvu put up one of the best seasons at LB this team has ever seen. His under appreciation by some fans was criminal. He alone was our 3 down stop machine. Brown was pretty much it up front. Those 2 held RBs in check long enough for safety help to arrive.  Coaching: Halftime adjustments and no prevent defense. In a nutshell, that’s pretty much it. No cutesy offense to show off WRs/Bryce when it’s not working. Use your sledgehammers, Dave.  There is finally veteran leadership and legit NFL talent. It’s going in the right direction (I couldn’t have been more wrong last offseason) to build a winning culture, but teams have to learn how to win, especially the games where nothing is going right (this team has NEVER been able to do that). They will still lose more close games than they win, and that alone is where it all hinges.
    • With his current level of play I'm quite content to not activate his 5th year option and let him walk away for free after year 4.
