Malcolm Butler's response to his benching

I don't think that move made a huge difference.  Malcolm Butler is a decent corner, but I never felt that he was the kind of gamechanger that some made him out to be.  If it weren't for his game winning INT, he wouldn't have ever been a big name as a corner.  Someone is gonna overpay for him in the offseason, I hope it's not us.

Question is whether or not Butler is a fit for CAR? Not sure that he is...I’ve never thought he was more than a system guy. Their D even with him this year was Swiss cheese. It would be very Marty hurney to break the bank ala Ken Lucas. He isn’t that good tho...

You know it, I know it, the country knows it -- and most importantly, the Patriots themselves know it -- that keeping Malcolm Butler on the bench cost them Super Bowl 52.

Butler benching was a maddening capper to a weird year

I won't argue that Belichick's system works, but if his ego took physical form, it would be big enough to knock the Earth off its axis.

People like that sometimes get in their own way. I'd say Belichick definitely did that yesterday.

Patriots definitely made what I thought were some ill advised decisions on defense.  They waited until after halftime to put Gilmore on Jeffrey, and benching Butler didn't help things because I certainly think he's a better player than Rowe.   Belichick makes decisions like this sometimes and when it works he looks like a genius, but this time it backfired.

Butler's a fighter though.  I'd like to have him on our defense.  He'd bring a little attitude to the table, which we need.

I get the irony, but would you make the argument that David Tyree is a game changer?  Just because someone has a big play in the super bowl, that doesn't make them a game changer.  Malcolm Butler had zero effect on the 2017 super bowl they won.  Also, he has 1 playoff INT in 11 games, not exactly "game changing"...in fact that screams more of someone that opposing teams would pick on, but that's just me.

The way the eagles guys were running free a knife suggest that they picked on most of the backfield. Butler may ot have done much in the regular season but in a important game like this he should have played having SB experience he was the difference maker against Searle and might would have been in this one.. The only person that played well in the secondary was Chung and gillmore. He should have played.

    • The era that you played in, and, more importantly, who you played with actually matters. Honestly, that's why these issues will be debated forever, as it's just difficult to say that this person or that person is better when you're discussing the passage of time. As for me, after Rice, Moss and maybe Megatron and T.O., there's probably a dozen or so guys that can be argued about to the cows come home. Personally, I'm not putting Fitz, Harrison, Johnson, Evans, or especially D-Hop, Jefferson, Chase or Hill definitely in front of Smitty (and Colston ain't even in the discussion). Context and all that stuff actually matters. Things like the triple crown matter.
    • Some of those guys? Yeah honestly you can.  I would 100% take Steve Smith over Larry Fitzgerald, Harrison, even Mike Evans. He is 100% a better player than those guys in his prime. If you look at the numbers Smith is historically under targeted in comparison to his contemporaries. He was only targeted 150 times or more only once in his career. Fitzgerald for example was targeted well above that 9 different seasons. Had Smith played with Peyton, Brady, Greatest Show on Turf, or even with Warner in Arizona he would broken records. His 2008 season was ridiculous accumulating 1400 yards in 13 games on less than 80 receptions. All time he also lost a season due to injury in 04, barely played WR as a rookie. Got robbed of 1k season with Clausen. Thats easily another 1800yds minimum that should have been tacked on to his #s. The only guys I’d say for certain are better than Smith are Rice, Moss, TO, Megatron, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown.
    • I parked in this lot a few times. It would take over and hour to get out of that lot after games. Never again
