Person believes Gilbert could be the backup

Comfortable with him in a non-WCO system?

As a backup yes. Though I wouldn't want him anyways because of his price tag. But I do think he could be an Anderson replacement and be our longterm backup, IF that's the route we want to go.

You have to be able to consistently throw the ball down the field in this offense.  System fit matters more than Madden ratings.

Ladies and gentlemen, let's flip the Joe Person coin.....

Heads, he's a mental midget who couldn't add 2 + 2 three times and come up with the same number twice.

Tails, he's a competent newswriter that has his finger on the Panthers pulse, with lots of in-depth analysis.

Just kidding, of course it's a two-headed coin.

He's started one game over the last three years.  One.  This is why Carolina Huddle has such a rotten reputation.  You guys a really, really idiotic.

Go ahead and get into a bidding war for backup quarterbacks.

Well, first off, he's started TWO games the past 3 years. TWO.

Someone's forgetting about his amazing opening drive against Seattle. That's like, 100% more starts than what you originally thought.

He has seen meaningful time in a number of games though, and in those games he's looked not great recently. Last pre-season he was just not very good at all. His price is going to be too high to retain most likely, so I'm fine with bringing in a younger back-up with potential to trade away a la Jimmy GQ.

DA is a sufficient backup QB for this offense.  Stop over thinking it.

No. Gilbert was the most polished looking guy under center in preseason last year.  And that includes Cam.  Give him a chance to become our backup guy.  From what I saw hes already better than Anderson.

In fairness, most backup QB's would have cost us games in the Shula offense. It was based around, "PLEASE SAVE US, CAM" as it's central philosophy.

If we can get a legit QB option to draft as a backup, I am okay with that as long as we aren't neglecting other positions of need(of which we will likely have many). I am down with signing a free agent assuming they don't break the bank. If DA is cheaper than the free agent options, I don't have a problem with keeping DA for another year or two. The discussion of what to do if Cam goes down is a little overstated. Without Cam, we aren't a very good offense at all. Period.

I'm very curious to see how Gilbert looks this preseason.  I'd like to see him as the preseason #2 instead of #3.  That would give us a much better idea of what we have there.  In the glimpses we have, he's looked ok.

Preseason #2 would mean him getting the majority of the snaps, even against the first team. You know they're not going to trot Cam out there for any extensive time.

The problem with that strategy is that if you find out he ISN'T the guy at that point, you are most likely SOL until next offseason. The FA QB market will be picked over and the draft will be in the rear view. Essentially, if you elevate him to #2 by the preseason, you have to be convinced he is your #2.

We will see what they think of him by watching our moves in the draft and/or free agency.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
