I don't see this as an anything for the Panthers just yet. That remains to be seen.

I'm not really sure why people are talking as if cutting him and not paying him anything would be some sort of a win though. Granted, he wouldn't done anything against the cap, but that would also mean we traded away a young player for basically nothing.

A young player who stood a better than average chance of not making the team any way. My son is young, and I love him dearly, but I would not want him playing CB for the Panthers.

I mean at the end of the year he was still getting benched for Kevon, and both were taken off the field for Gunter.

Worley actually despite the benching game back and made some decent plays IMO.

Bradberry got abused badly down the stretch.  Worse than Worley did early on.

I would have just hung on to Worley another year.  That's just me.

How do you know it's better?  Byrd and Samuels are both really fast, but just happened to get hurt.

Smith has proven more in this league than they have, and he's proven to stay relatively healthy.    Byrd and Samuels haven't done this, and in fact, both look like the wind can blow and put them on the DL.     I hope not though and we have THREE guys with speed, it's been lacking for a long time.

Yeah, he'll make one pass breakup or one good tackle, and then let four completions land.

I think the Panthers are counting on Torrey Smith to start and/or at least play a lot of meaningful snaps.  Besides Funchess, we have a massive disappointment in Russell Shepard, "potential" in guys like Samuel & Byrd (who both haven't been able to stay healthy and/or endure NFL level hits), an old stand-by like Bersin, a returner in Kaelin Clay who shouldn't see the field as a regular WR, and our old standby scholarship guy in Bersin.

I am not discounting the potential in Samuel or Byrd, and CMC adds an element as a receiver too, but this is still not a group on paper that is going to keep opposing DC's up at night.

IMO Torrey Smith is the defacto starter across from Funchess unless/until someone else steps up

I'd like to hope they think he can start. Otherwise we just traded a younger, cheaper starter for an older, more expensive backup.

Well, that's basically what we did.

I thought you wanted a veteran wide out. Maybe I was wrong.

That’s why Smith is a good trade. He’s a veteran deep threat who stays healthy. But also doesn’t bump Byrd or Samuel off the roster as they gradually develop.

Ginn's best three years were in New Orleans and Carolina--he averaged about 720 yards each season.

Smith averaged about 920 yards in Baltimore until leaving for QB-less SF.   Even in SF, he had a season where he had 663 yards.  In Philly, they had a ton of WRs and a young QB.  He could not develop chemistry, so they moved him out.

In this system, the odds are that Smith will return to his 50-yard per game pace.  It will also loosen things up for Funchess and CMC, and it can be balanced with Samuel.  I think we draft a solid TE and we are probably set.  Not sure we draft a WR now--but we could.  Sheperd is upgraded a lot--Samuel and Byrd with be healthy. New TE for 2 TE sets--the weaponry is there.

RB and TE in draft; OG in free agency?

Torrey Smith is better than anyone not named Funchess (or maybe him too) on this roster and you are lying to yourself if you think different.

2013 Smith is a better receiver.

2018 Smith remains to be seen.

    • Right, so basically what I said in my first post about this last night. Tepper needs to use that big wallet of his in one of the few ways it can be used in the NFL given the cap.   Give Scourton a bigger signing bonus but not a fully guaranteed deal. Everyone wins in that scenario as if Scourton is smart and hires good money people, he'll take that bigger signing bonus and use it to make more money in the end over the next 4 years than if he just had his fully guaranteed deal and a smaller signing bonus.
    • It is all confusing and layered. SB is the cash you get very soon within weeks or in simple terms, its what you get to sign the paper work. Players and agents can agree on contract but what to "wait" to sign......teams don't like that cause you can "Carlos Boozer" yourself. In order to get that ink dry, while keeping the contract the same, portion it as a bonus to "sign" and get the funds with ________ .   * But Ive seen worded contracts that split the SB or a 20% to a later date. The beans counters can fill in the details about why certain dates are better and save the team money.. Theres tricks to the trade and accounting is full of them.    Ugh another big layer, is SB can be used to manipulate cap and players. Ill try to give a example that makes enough sense. Believe it or not having a owner like Tepper is a cheat code for this. He has cash in hand, where as Mark Davis had problem making pay roll and had to move the team to Vegas....... Tepper can give you 100,000,000 SB right now and the team can spread out the cap hit. Another owner doesn't have or want to give the player 100,000,000 in cash, but offered the same guaranteed contract in roster bonuses fully guaranteed over the next few years........ Which one do you want??? Everyone wants the money now, not before another inflation waves hits in 2 years. So it does 'pay" to have a owner like tepper that's able to have real cash on hand, while it also works GREAT for cap help. Heres a good video, if you can stand coked up pat and mask look-a-like AJ
