My analysis of this trade is that Smith is our no risk try for a Ginn replacement or even upgrade. One takeaway is that Hurney didn’t value Worley at all and he was at risk of just getting cut. Smith has better hands than Ginn (though he’s far from a Larry Fitzgerald) and has throughout his career been a more consistent and more well rounded receiver — though both are mainly pure deep threats. Also note how healthy Smith has been, which is nice to see after Byrd and Samuel last year. Basically we made this move to guarantee us a look at Smith with Cam and if they can develop chemistry similar to Cam and Ginn then we’ll keep him and he’d be well worth the $5M. Otherwise we cut him and there’s no real loss considering Worley wasn’t valued anyways. I’m one of Hurney’s biggest critics here and one of DG’s biggest supporters but I’ll give this move a chance. Could be a home run if Smith and Cam get on the same page early. Exact type of WR we needed the most.

Smith was going to be a cap casualty anyway. he was going to get cut

But his value on the open market would be at or exceed his current value. We don't lose anything here, he's going into the final year of his deal, this was a good trade.

People should try to understand that, it's almost the same price we'd have been paying for Ted Ginn (3 yrs, 11M), but over their careers Smith has been consistently better.

Yes, this may be true, but if hes cut then he has an opportunity to get other contracts or offers.  Just because hes cut doesn't mean we would have first bids.

Then he would have hit the open market and no guarantee we could have got him.

Not only that, his current contract has 0 guaranteed money left on it, so he’s very low risk for us to cut as well if we don’t see the value.

I could honestly see us converting his base salary into a signing bonus and lowering his cap figure significantly if we deem it necessary.

    • Bryce just didn't maximize Hunter Renfrow's skills. ***rant incoming*** But this isn't just about Bryce Young mistiming passes to Renfrow so bad that he's going to get Renfrow killed or hurt, this is also about incompetentence by Dave Canales. Renfrow can still play. He's putting DBs in a blender out there---making them play twister at the top of routes to keep up with him, and dumb Dave has the nerve to cut him. How about putting Hunter in the best position to help the damned offense by appreciating his skill set, DC? You're letting Bryce's apparent inability to make an accurate throw, or at least his timidity to push the ball down the damned field cloud your judgment and miscalculate talent---or maybe just miss on talent just as much as Bryce misses passes due to playing pussified football. It's fúcking unacceptable.  Speaking of misjudgment, I don't know if it's Dan Morgan or Canales, but Eijiro Evero is not the business at DC. I have said a few times that his scheme is not conducive to run-stopping efficiency. Hell, and after watching some clips of plays, now I absolutely know why. The gaps are at least half open before the play even fúcking starts. You are setting the opposition's RBs up for success with too much damned space at the line and in the second level. If our guys are taken out in these areas---at the line and in the second level---then the defense is screwed because it must rely on the safeties to cover too much ground to make the tackle. At least put Ransom in who is motivated to seek and destroy if you're going to effectively leave the safeties on an island.  And speaking of rookies, get our two new defensive ends more snaps to see if we can't generate more of a pass rush. For all the good the continued sorry display of defense that you're putting out for fan's to see (Ejiro, Dave and Dan), you may as well get the rookies generously involved. Fúck that money we gave second-rate (maybe second-rate) vets, we need a damned spark getting after the QB. Watch it, it's just another breakdown of the sh¡t we were subjected to last week. I say this with all respect: Fúck you, Dave! Fúck you, Dan! Learn how to run a fúcking franchise. Maximize the players, regardless of what you think you're supposed to do by the book. Cut the dead weight before another season is lost and fans lose interest in September. EE is "Ew!" Or for emphasis "EEw!" /end rant
    • But nobody is saying he is a good deep ball passer.  But the facts are since he's returned from his benching, he has been throwing downfield.  Whether you want to credit the scheme, Bryce himself, or whatever, he has been pushing it deep.  Not to any positive results mind you, but it has been happening.
