Great post.  Here is why:  You draft  a player for 4 years--most rookies do not step in and play at a high level.  So  when you draft in 2018, it is for 2019 or even 2020.  Take a look at the left side of the OL in 2020--

A new LT, a new LG, a new C.

If, big if he is there James Daniels makes a ton of sense.  Can probably start at G then move to center after next year.  Price could too if healthy.  Daniels I read has had some knee issues so that will require some checking.

Wynn probably gets a long look as he can be great at G and maybe can handle OT or even center if needed.  Doubt he gets to 24 but he'd be a nice pick there.

With how devalued traditional rbs have been and with a growing emphasis on dynamic pass catching rbs (see McKinnon s deal, Lewis s) I cannot even fathom how people have a second rb as a top 3 need for this team. Like I am literally banging my head into the wall right now trying to give myself a concussion in hopes that I might be able to understand why it’s so important to have a great bruising back. Draft one mid-late round and move on. We literally spent the 8th overall pick on a rb last year and people want to use a 1/2/3 on another rb this year? My God

With that said, my needs are

1. Safety

2. DE

3. Guard( can moton play this?)

*obligatory mention of 2nd string qb* a need for sure but one I hope we don’t spend solid resources on. 6th round pick would be ideal for me

Wants:

1. An early round prospect that could be a true WR1 Cam hasn’t had since smitty

2. TE

3. Cb ( seems like the new guy will do great here in a zone heavy scheme, but I’m worried about how cheap he was and how none of his past teams wanted to retain him)

4. Project LT that could replace Kalil once his contract permits us to replace him

I get that you need to draft with an eye on the future. But the restructure means Kalil is basically uncuttable for 2 years. Last year we drafted a 2nd rnd LT.  So a high pick is guaranteed to sit unless management do a 180 on incumbent players. C would sit for at least a year behind Kalil. We would also be saying we have zero faith in Larsen. Despite him being more impressive than the Ravens Jensen who just got a ridiculous contract in FA from the bucs. LG i get but its the easiest position to make do with. I mean Norwell himself was a UDFA.

Maybe I am wrong, but I just don't see Moton as a LT.  Larsen (IMO) is a serviceable backup, but I am not confident he is the OL leader Kalil was due to the offensive production comparison. Hard to judge individuals in a team sport like this because there are many variables, but you bring up Norwell.

I remember listening to Rivera talk about Norwell. In  one-on-one drills, he was terrible. He was nearly cut.  but in team situations, because he was smart, Norwell played well.  I hope you are right--and I wonder if the Scriles and Banner acquisitions were not attempts to fill that spot with an anybody---

M.Kalil can be cut after this season, if I am not mistaken. Is he the "restructure" you refer to in your post?

With that said, my needs are

1. Safety  This has to be the #1 need at this point--or LG.

2. DE  A lot depends on the unknown, and I mean Hall.  If he can play this season, we should still consider a DE, but maybe not in this draft.

3. Guard( can moton play this?) I think Moton should play LG even if we are going to use him at LT next season.  Playing beats sitting, and I think Moton is going to be a G or RT in the NFL--not sure LT is his best position.

*obligatory mention of 2nd string qb* a need for sure but one I hope we don’t spend solid resources on. 6th round pick would be ideal for me

Wants:

1. An early round prospect that could be a true WR1 Cam hasn’t had since smitty  Is Cam at his best when he has a #1?  He tended to force the ball to Benji, and we won without him.   We now have WRs that can stretch the field (Smith, Byrd)  and WRs who can catch the underneath routes (Wright).  Throw in a good TE or so, and we can keep the entire secondary honest.  I would not be surprised if we added a WR in the draft, but I am thinking that we are done.  Did we improve?  Yep.  I think so.

4. Project LT that could replace Kalil once his contract permits us to replace him  Me too.

I felt compelled to add my perspective to your comments.  Not arguing--just sharing my thinking on these things...My comments in bold.

Yeah. M Kalil. Now I'm no expert on the NFL contract thing but as i understand it the restructure guarantees the money up front so that the possible out that existed would't result in any saving if we cut him. My issue is that we can't cut him and not only have we publicly backed him we've now made a binding financial commitment. Then we have Moton. This is my reasoning for not drafting LT though i want a change...

I feel the exact opposite in this regard. I have a hard time seeing why people brush it to the side like its no big deal.

It's in Ron's DNA to pound the rock. We have averaged 490 carries per season over the last 3 years.

Cam is averaging 120 of those carries. That leaves 370 for someone else.

Even if we keep letting Cam carry over a 100 times a season, and increase McCaffreys carries by 50 or so, that still leaves a ton of carries for someone else.

With the way we chose to use McCaffrey last year he nearly saw as many receiving targets as he did rushing attempts. Let's take a look at his rushing stats.

Running: 117 Attempts for 435 yards, 2 TD'S and 21 first downs and 3.7 ypc.

Using a minimum of 100 carries as a qualifier heres how he stacked up.

  • 37 of 48 of those players rushed for more than 3.7 YPC. Stewart is one of the few the few he beat out (3.4 ypc).
  • He was 1 of 7 out of those 48 to rush for 2 TD's or less.
  • His 21 rushing first downs was tied for 48th in the league.

He is much more of a weapon for us in the pass game (113 targets,80 receptions, 651 Yards, 5 TD's and 36 first downs).

This leaves a major vacancy for someone to take over the role Stewart did and just do a better job than him this will help our offense a ton. It also provides insurance in the event McCaffrey goes down with an injury. No I don't have faith in CAP or Whittaker.

All that being said, I am not promoting or even advocating using  a first round pick on a RB. The value typically is not there.  However that does not mean its still not a top need for this team.

And if you are worried about having another quality RB on the team stealing snaps from McCaffrey there is still plenty to go around. He was in on 746 snap's last year and Stewart was in on 403.

The dude has never even started a game.  They said he looked good in a few plays, but thats a few plays.  Worley looked in a few plays.  He's as much as a unkown as a rookie.

CBs especially 1st rounders start right away about as often as any other position.  Look at last year.  And correct we arent picking top 5.  But if Josh Jackson is there, he is coming in and starting right away making a major impact

Are you talking about Ross Cockrell?  He’s started 32 games in 3 seasons.
