Deeper look at who might be available at 24

There seem's to be a consensus of roughly 14 players that never make it to pick 24 in most mock drafts found online. Outside of these players every one else seems to slip to us in a fair amount of mocks.

  • 4 QB'S, Darnold,Allen,Rosen and Mayfield.
  • 3 DB'S Derwin James, Denzel Ward and Minka Fitzpatrick
  • 2 DE's, Chubb and Marcus Davenport
  • 2 LB'S Roquan Smith and Tremaine Edmunds
  • 1 RB, Barkley
  • 1 G, Nelson
  • 1 DT, Vita Vea

History over the last 4 draft's bears out like this.

On average 3.75 WR'S  and 3.75 offensive tackles have gone in the top 23 picks. The above list does not list any receivers or Offensive tackles.

History also shows an average of 3 DE's and LB's going before 24. There are only of  2 of each of those positions above.

Lastly that list is just .75 short of the average of 3.75 DB's taken in the first 23 over the last 4 years.  Of the positions not listed above only TE (3) and Center (1) have cracked the top 23 over the past 4 years. So it stands to reason that there may be a bigger run on WR'S, Tackles,DE's,LB'S and DB'S. It's just hard to predict what those names may be. Its also plausible a TE or Center could squeeze their way into there or maybe even another RB (they've averaged 1.25 a year in this time frame).

To take it a step further, heres the draft order of teams 15-23  in the 18 draft and what they used their 1st rounder on last year.

  • 15 Cardinals, Hasson Reddick LB
  • 16 Ravens,Marlon Humphrey CB
  • 17 Chargers, Mike Williams WR
  • 18 Seahawks, No 1st round pick
  • 19 Cowboys, Taco Charlton DE
  • 20 Lions, Jarrad Davis LB
  • 21 Bengals, John Ross WR
  • 22 Bills, Tre'Davious White CB
  • 23 Rams, NO First round pick.

  • I could see the Cardinals in the hunt for a DB  with the loss of Matthieu.
  • The Ravens need some serious help to their WR core as well. They lost Wallace and Maclin. Picked up Crabtree and John Brown but thats about all they have.
  • Not sure what the direction the chargers will go but they seem to be stacked at DE,CB, AND WR, all positions that would interest us.
  • With the departure's of Sherman, Bennett and Richardson, the Seahawks needs seem pretty similar to ours.
  • The cowboy's biggest need in common with us seems to be safety.
  • Lion's have holes everywhere except WR or QB, so I feel like they could go any direction outside of those 2 positions.
  • Bengal's, another team unlikely to go after WR, after drafting Ross in the top 10 and already having Green.
  • Bill's may eventually package that pick to go get a QB, however if they stay there, they could be looking for a CB OR WR as well.
  • The Rams are def. all set at corner and DT after aggresively attacking both positions this offseason. They obviously have interest in replacing Watkins, since they have inquired about him and they did trade DE Robert Quinn this year too.

All that being said its surely looking like we will have a BPA decision to make between O-line, WR, CB and DE as those positions seem likely to hold the most value at 24 and align with our current set of needs.

Again it gets real murky after the top 14 consensus players get selected on who might make it to 23. Here's a list of 10 names that may be of interest and stand a chance to make it to us and at least 1 of them should be available.

  1. Calvin Ridley WR
  2. Josh Jackson CB
  3. Jaire Alexander CB
  4. Isiah Wynn      OG
  5. Will Hernandez OG
  6. Christian Kirk WR
  7. Harold Landry DE
  8. Sam Hubbard DE
  9. Justin Reid Safety (He's Jordan Rodrique's prediction at the moment).
  10. Any RB not named Barkley (Darin Gantt predicted Nick Chubb at 24 on WFNZ today)

From Tony Pauline:

In conversations last week, the day before Josh Allen had his pro-day workout, a team picking in the top 15 -- who shall remained unnamed -- shared the order of top 15 players on its board. It went like this:

1 - Sam Darnold/QB/USC

2 - Josh Allen/QB/Wyoming

3 - Josh Rosen/QB/UCLA

4 - Bradley Chubb/DL/North Carolina State

5 - Saquon Barkley/RB/Penn State

6 - Quenton Nelson/G/Notre Dame

7 - Minkah Fitzpatrick/DB/Alabama

8 - Denzel Ward/CB/Ohio State

9 - Tremaine Edmunds/LB/Virginia Tech

10 - Roquan Smith/LB/Georgia

11 - Baker Mayfield/QB/Oklahoma

12 - Derwin James/S/Florida State

13 - Vita Vea/DL/Washington

14 - Leighton Vander Esch/LB/Boise State

15 - Calvin Ridley/WR/Alabama

Harold Landry would be BPA in that scenario and, believe it or not, is a North Carolina product (right outside of Fayetteville)

I would count Landry as too light to handle the 43 DE but good for the 34 OLB, but that is just me

WR's in this draft are mostly 2nd round grades, so if Ridley drops, it would be a surprise

RB's however are very good this year, but the position is not as valued as it used to be.

I would so love to have 2 picks in the top 10 of the second round

    • Nobody is giving up a 4th rounder for a backup QB And anyone who needs a starter badly enough to where Bryce would then be their starter, is such a bad team that they're not giving up a pick likely to be about pick 105ish overall, instead of just dealing with a bad QB situation for a season and then drafting one in a loaded QB draft next year. I'm looking through all the teams right now and can't think of a single one that would be willing to part with anything better than a 6th rounder. Barring injuries (and excluding the Panthers), there look to be 10 teams who don't know with 100% certainty who their starting QB will be in 2027... Dolphins, Jets, Browns, Steelers, Vikings, Colts, Saints, Falcons, Cardinals, and Rams. Of those 10...  The Rams know it will be Stafford or Simpson.  The Saints more than likely will be sticking with Shough unless he takes a huge step backwards.  So neither are giving up any draft picks for Bryce right now, just wouldn't make sense for either. Down to 8 Given their current QB situation of having multiple QBs they already need to evaluate between this year, the Browns (Shedeur/Watson), Vikings (Kyler/JJ), Colts (Jones/Richardson/Leonard), and Falcons (Penix/Tua), wouldn't be giving up a 4th (or maybe any pick) to bring in another QB to muddy the waters even more. Down to 4 Dolphins just signed Willis and wouldn't want to bring in another small Alabama QB who has struggled after just dumping Tua instead of just rolling with Ewers as the backup.   That then leaves the Steelers, Cardinals, and Jets left as it's clear none of them have any idea who their 2027 could be as of right now.  But the Steelers would for sure rather just see what one of the 2 QB's they drafted in the last 2 drafts could become than give up a mid round pick for Bryce.  Same goes for the Cardinals in taking Beck this past weekend. The Jets would be the most likely team to even consider taking him on, but I think it seems very apparent right now given them rolling with Geno and now talk of bringing in Wilson to be his backup, they're punting on QB this year to draft someone next year, so why give up even a mid round pick for Bryce?
    • Honestly I am not sure Pickett couldn’t step in for him. But I don’t see a clear easy upgrade and we are not KC with Alex Smith we are a team that hadn’t done poo for almost ten years and just made the playoffs. And looked good in the game. That stadium atmosphere on that day…. you know Tepper ate that poo up. Not one drink has been thrown in a while.  You had better make sure if you replaced him after that that you had a sure fire upgrade.
    • Makes sense. If Bryce is ass this year, we are probably drafting our new QB next draft and sitting him behind Bryce for a year
