Panthers offseason

Carolina Panthers

During the past couple seasons, the Panthers have gone from kings of the NFC to arguably the third-best team in their division. This free agency period did not seem to reverse the tide.

A bizarre foot injury requiring a skin graft doomed Carolina’s agreement with former [Washington] cornerback Bashaud Breeland — this after the Panthers agreed to trade one of their own corners, Daryl Worley, to Philadelphia for receiver Torrey Smith.

”Not getting Breeland might have been a blessing in disguise for them, because even though he is a good player, his play has declined every year for the last three years,” an insider said.

There was much less surprise when All-Pro guard Andrew Norwell departed for $13.3 million per year with Jacksonville, or when starting defensive tackle Star Lotuleleiaccepted $10 million per year from Buffalo. Carolina replaced Lotulelei with Dontari Poewhile ... trading for Smith and signing Jarius Wright at receiver.

”Their plan is to get younger on the back end, so we could see them focus there in the draft,” an insider said. “They still need another running back. I feel like they still need a receiver. They put all that money into Matt Kalil at left tackle last year, and that was a mistake. So there are question marks on offense, too.”

Does anyone else feel like we actually may have won with the way the Breeland deal played out? He's a good player but I think Cockrell is a great fit and it likely freed up the cash to sign Poe, which should help the pass rush alongside KK and the ends.

Yes. I think the only mistake in FA was not getting a number 1 WR and keeping Russell shepherd.  A rookie is not going to provide that this year

Arguably the third best team my a$$. Same record as division champs last year and 2 years removed from a SB appearance. No actual facts support that opinion.

Right.

Public perception of teams is an interesting thing in the offseason.  Rams for example, are darlings and can do no wrong and Eagles just won the Super Bowl so every move they make is considered genius.

Saints and falcons handed us our asses for most of our 5 losses and again in the playoffs which is embarrassing as fug to lose to 1 team 3 times in a single season.... I'd say 3rd best too. Way to be a homer tho.

    • I don't really care as much about athleticism and arm strength.  While Murray might be better in that regard, I think Bryce has enough of both to do well in the NFL. The main reason this trade reference is silly is the money and the fact that Murray has been around a long while and hasn't proven that he can perform consistently when the game is on the line.  Bryce has shown that he can play well in the clutch (in the few opportunities he has had).
    • If Bryce can continue the level of play he showed after the benching, then there's a good shot we at least compete to win the division. Tampa is a solid team but even last year in our week division they went 10-7 and will be on their 4th OC in as many years. The Saints are a mess and are in a mist of a half rebuild half still trying to compete mode and will probably be starting a rookie QB. The Falcons are a wild card as they have a really good offense but are we really crowning Michael Penix as a franchise QB after just 3 games?  The only thing I want out of this season is for Bryce to come out and without a shadow of a doubt prove he's our franchise QB. If that happens then most of the fanbase would be happy and I believe we'd be in a good place record wise at the end of the season. Maybe falling just short of winning the division with a chance to sneak in as a wild card team.
