Do we stay away from players from specific schools?

Recommended Posts

I don't think this is intentional but, I always wonder why we don't target players from higher profile colleges. Teams that win championships like Alabama,FSU, and Clemson don't have a large presence on our team. To me those school land the big time recruits out of high school thus, probably have higher athletic upside. Does that correlate to the lack of team speed or athletic upside? Or is this a part of a underlying problem that we assume kids from certain programs have more red flags or off the field issues? Is that why we chose Moore over Ridley? This is largely just offseason banter and I don't put a ton of stock in it but,It's clear our roster doesn't have a large presence from certain school who produce nation championships on a regular basis. If it was me my team would probably be full of bama kids or fsu kids kind of like the eagles who just won the chip.

I was wondering the same thing, but more so if we just avoid weather coast, but I didn't watch the whole draft, nor do I have any clue who we drafted after rd3, so idk if we went west coast or not haha, just always seems we draft close to home

You can’t put too much stock into high school. See Jimmy Clausen and Tyler Brayton. Alabama’s front 7 wins them championships but are not a direct scheme fit for us and they do not overpower NFL OL like they did at bama. We just drafted an LSU corner. I’m sure we’d draft Ferrell from Clemson in 19’ given the opportunity.

The best WR in the league went to Central Michigan, best QB Michigan, best RB Michigan St, best TE Arizona, best DT Pittsburgh, best LB Boston College, etc.

they all come from different teams

This isn’t true. We may not draft certain players that played certain schemes but we have had players from all of those colleges, usually udfa but still we do sign them. Even this draft we signed a Clemson udfa, we did last year as well. Roman Harper and Robert Lester are two safeties that I remember off the top of my head. We also traded for Kevin Norwood who played for Alabama a few years ago.

Cam Newton is from a national championship team.

MARYLAND / LSU / TENNESSEE / INDIANA / OLE MISS / MARYLAND / UNC / MIA

The above are all the colleges we drafted players from, all are fairly close to our own ''region'' as a Carolina centered sports franchise. The above colleges cover the following:

Big 10 / SEC / ACC

That's about as power conference affiliated as you're gonna get for the most part.

Even the UDFA's hail from schools like - CLEMSON / PENN ST / LOUISVILLE / WV / MICH ST / OHIO ST / HOUSTON

So to say we stay away from specific schools isn't really founded on anything of substance.

Also Alabama runs a 3-4, players from their front seven would not fit our base 4-3 scheme for those that would bang that drum. Notice that Payne this year and Allen last both went to WAS <<< a 3-4 defensive front.

Some of you guys should really start to consider what these colleges run, on offense / defense, and try to cross reference it with what we do, that in and of itself will help provide some clarity on potential draftees, or even schemes a FA is coming from.

In essence, individuals are recruited, not schools.

What about Alabama’s offensive line? They run a power heavy run which I would say would translate to what we do well and they have a history of landing the top graded offensive line prospects..

You picked 2 of the worst case senerios... but on average most of all the top players who are recruited out 5 Star or so are drafted. A lot of them go on to be stars at a higher rate.. Derwin James Eric berry Adrian Peterson and so on. The percentages lean towards if your Going to guess its better to guess on a kid who has been rated a top athlete for 7-8 years of his life than some unknown.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.
    • Hiring Shula & his Cam save us playbook.
    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
