No too-clever-by-half bullsh*t or deranged arrogance - just reading the field and playing the game. An absolute master aging like a fine wine.

Yeah, just look at that trophy case.  Fuggin Master!

Heres a recap of what stood out to me when listening to the full interview:

  • They were ready for every scenario possible to play out
  • Really thinks Ian Thomas can be a complete tight end and was a great value at top of 4th,made sure to mention him 1st when asked about Skill position players added.
  • Sure sounds like our first pick was locked in on being a WR because we knew 1 of Ridley or Moore would be there. I think he assumed another team would make the decision for us on which one (Moore or Ridley) and if they had already gone would have pushed Ragnow down and he would have been the guy
  • "Honestly it was tough decision" Tiebreaker went to Moore because of run after catch ability and the fact that he still produced while teams knew he was essentially the whole offense at Maryland and locked in on stopping him.
  • Donte Jackson gives us a skill set we didn't have on the roster.
  • Washington want's to play more man to man, having players like Donte who can follow a speedy guy inside or out will help with that
  • Gaulden, has all the traits of a safety and think he will turn into a guy who will play back there for a long time
  • Lot's of guards we liked but they flew off the board, considered trading up to grab one, but teams were asking too much so that thought didn't last long
  • Really would have liked to add interior o-line, RB, and backup QB in the draft but board did not fall that way, so we took what the board gave us at other positions of need
  • Kept saying you've got to decide where to put your resources you have left and what position's. Got to prioritize what areas your going to spend he resources you have left and what positions they will go to.
  • Safety absolutely could be added "if the right one comes up and we can afford to do that then we will"
  • Was then asked about Eric Reid and said "we definitely looked at him and now you have to decide do you feel good at saftey, backup RB, backup QB and where you're going to use your resources"
  • Tre Boston has alluded to it before but I think the "if we can afford it" statement from Hurney kind of confirms safeties haven't signed yet because theres too much of a gap in what the players at the safety position feel they are worth and what the teams value them at. This is specific to the safety position.
  • He kept using the word resources instead of cap space, so maybe i'm reading too much into it but a trade may be possible as well.
  • I feel like we are almost guaranteed to bring in a vet RB AND QB after it won't affect our comp picks (may 11th).

About 14 minutes, feel free to listen for yourself here: http://www.wfnz.com/articles/news/marty-hurney-we-looked-eric-reid

Sounds fair and makes sense.  The idea of us playing more man was what I was hoping when we picked Donte.  The guards did seem to go really quick.

The fact we weren't able to address every need shouldn't really surprise anyone.  Unless we had 8 picks in the top 100 it wasn't going to happen.

If we had spent our two 7ths on a RB and G people around here would view the draft a lot differently, when in reality that odds are against them turning out to be even average starters. (even though I really wanted Scarbrough.

Are you Marty Hurney? As an ex-College Coach, as your signature proclaims, you understand resource allocation through position coaches and time spent in recruiting. Hurney, being the master GM he is, tied up so much money in our runningbacks and giving Jake Delhomme an extension that we had to start Sione Fua and Terrell McClain, as rookies, on the interior of the defensive line.

There is a reason he was fired, and it wasn't because he was disliked. Gettlemen was fired because he didn't mesh with the rest of the organization whereas Hurney was fired for doing a piss poor job in the final 3 years he was here. Perhaps he was able to research and come up with new methodologies for doing his work, but the fact remains that until these players produce, and he is asked to begin giving contracts of consequence (thinking Devin Funchess, CMC), he hasn't come back from the pits he put us in.

If they sign any of the safeties it will be after the May 8 expiration date for compensatory offset for FAs.  That’s when the market will heat up.

Bingo and as far as heat up deals close to Vet minimums will be flying off the shelf. He played well for 900k last year if he get 1.3 for a year here I'd think he'd sign to prove  he deserves that bigger payday.

Very nice summary. Well done. Hurney's interviews are usually insightful and forthcoming.

A couple of thoughts:

I know Steve Smith was saying yesterday that he got texts from 3 teams that were pissed off on draft night that the Panthers took Moore when they did.

As you eluded to, Tre Boston has said that the available safeties are being offered WR 4 type money at the moment. As mentioned in another thread, the safety position is really devalued right now across the league.

That's why I feel we'll get someone like Boston for the low, it'll be like last year he signed last year like May 15 for probably way less then expected this time he'll get more exposure being we have a better team with more national coverage then the  Las Vegas Chargers lol.

More sensible...than dumping Searcy

How can we dump Adams he was our best DB last year hands down.

Searcy better than Adams...directed toward the suggestion of cutting Searcy...ridiculous

There was an interview that I posted on here about Boston and some others safeties that were looking for $4-6m/year. We signed Searcy for $2.5m so that tells me the two sides were too far off to work something out. If he, or some of the others , drop from $5m to $1.5m while missing the opportunity to get Searcy's contract, that would be just about deadening to these guys. But that may be exactly where this market is heading.

Look at what the Steelers just did with their vet Safety and two rookies.

Don't see dumping Adams or Searcy. They will be our starters. We need vet starters. Look what happened in 2016 when we started 2 rookie corners.  I don't want any rookies starting. Let's work them into the rotation and give them reps before putting them out on an island.

What's sad is i don't even know who Searcy is. Our secondary is in deep trouble.

I agree with you for the most part. I don't mind Searcy starting as long as it's deserved through good competition, not by default because we didn't have anyone else above a caliber S#3 competing. At this point I'm not so sure we don't have the latter from what Hurney is saying.

CB >>>>>FS/SS. I have much more faith in a rookie saftey as opposed to a rookie CB.
