What do you think our defensive identity will be?

In 2015 we had thieve's avenue, with Josh Norman and Peanut Tillman bringing a swagger to the secondary.  That defense was a big part of what made the offense work--our average starting field position was best in the league and we were first in turnovers, turnover differential, and points off turnovers.

The other big part of what made our offense work was Cam, and the way he was just having fun out there.  When he has that confidence and is enjoying himself, you see great things happen (my favorite play last year was "You've been watching film?  Watch this!").  This year he's got a new receiver, Olsen's back, and Samuel is back.  That's three more reliable outlets to go with CMC, which will allow him to mix it up and mess around with the defenses.  Unless the line turns to swiss cheese, I can't imagine him not having a good time with these weapons in Norv's system.

That brings us back to the defense.  We need an identity, right?  Where do we get the swagger from?  Luke, Peppers and TD are amazing, but they just come in and do their job (great though it may be).  Could it possibly be a rookie?  Or from the line?  What do you think?

Defense was a problem all season in 17-18. I think we are clearly better now than last year. At least on paper we are. Poe will be a problem for offenses. I expect KK to have his best season since 2015 with Poe lining beside him. Star was huge in the run game but Poe can do exactly what Star does, do it better and can do more as a interior rusher.

We will get the SWAGGER from “Mike Mitchell”. He will be a Panther. You know he’s a Rivera type of safety. Mitchell and Gaulden will def bring the swag. And Donte Jackson has it too. I’m so tired of quiet humbled no trash talking corners like James Bradberry (Mr. Hot Potato).

Well as we saw last season our secondary was too slow to handle the Saints. To compound the problem our interior d-line failed to generate pressure up the middle against Brees. To fix the problem we've made 2 major moves.

1.) We let Star walk (we could have easily paid him) and replaced him with Poe. The hope is that Poe can get more penetration than Star.

2.) Donte Jackon, who ran a 4.32 on a bad start, is here to add speed to the secondary to combat the Saints speed.

Our identity? Expect Jackson to be blitzed like crazy once he is up to speed. Captain was maybe the worst blitzing CB I've ever seen and yet the Panthers continued to blitz him. Jackson should have better results. We'll be aggressive like last season, but with better results.

I think we get less or the same amount of sacks but more come from corners and line backers. I think to protect luke he rushes more but thats fine we rush jackson and gaulden/ young line backers more. coleman had 2.5 sacks i think we can get more in secondary. i also think we will be good against the run and get alot of turnovers but give up pass yards late in the game due to lack of experience back there/ being tired and old. I think we rank 9th overall but its a strong 9 overall. Like us going against the saints and falcons will distort overall numbers as we will have to have a  shoot out with them. I also think we come in second in division if we dont win.

    • I like Jaycee a lot and appreciate his leadership but to say he's above Ramsey right now is based on hopium let's be realistic. He's got a great deal to prove this season. I’m hoping to see that he firmly establishes himself amongst his peers.
    • It’s amazing how simple it is. When you are winning 2-7 games for 7 straight years, you’d think people would understand that just drafting some starters isn’t poo unless they are above average NFL starters. Justin Jefferson and Jamar Chase started their rookie years like Legette did so we got an elite WR in the 2024 draft. Luke was a rookie starter just like Wallace. Damn we basically got a Kuechly and Jefferson last year. Bravo Dan Morgan!!!
    • I didn’t even say they would be starters. I don’t think Legette will be and Coker was not drafted. Coker chose to sign with us because our WR room gave him a chance to start even though we drafted a guy in the 1st. That should tell you something when Coker chose to come to Carolina even after we took Legette. We drafted and signed guys to potentially replace Sanders, who isn’t a starter yet over Tremble) and Wallace. Go look at our other drafts since Rhule. We had tons of rookie contribution from all of our recent classes. Why, because our overall talent sucked and we needed bodies. Go look at PFR. Here’s some of our players who “started” for a year: TMJ, Mingo, BC, Ian Thomas, Jermaine Carter, Dennis Daley, YGM and Roy. That’s what Legette and Wallace are right now although unless TMac bombs, Legette has kind of already lost his spot. We’ve had shitty drafts since 2018 and every single one has contributed at least two guys who’ve started so 2024 is tied for last right now and we just had a draft where we took 3 more players who play the same position as 3 of our top 4 picks in 2024 but somehow I’m saying that the 2024 draft class is good? Nope, the 2024 draft class was bad and our team is still in the low enough talent quadrant that lots of rookie contribute in our holes until we replace them. Been the same story since 2018 and accelerated as the old solid vets retired/move on.
