Could Norv Turner Possibly Be Implementing A New Approach To His Scheme?

Since I just finished up writing on DJ Moore (just need @Jeremy Igo to publish it), I thought I'd share and discuss something that's been on my mind while writing.

From the looks of things, Norv Turner seems to be going against his old premonitions in the type of WR that fits his scheme. Rather than a big-bodied ISO receiving specialist, he choose one who currently specializes in the short-intermediate range and after the catch.

What this probably indicates is a shift in Norv's philosophy. While I'm sure Air Coryell will be a large part of his repertoire, I also feel like he's looking to modernize his offense to fit today's NFL.

First off, if anything, we pretty much have athletes all over the field. Only guy remotely close to Norv's big WR is Funchess. Now, it appears we have a diverse set of guys who specialize in quickness and YAC in Samuel, Moore, CMC, Byrd, etc.

And of course, if you've seen Norv's photo with Moore during his pro-day, it was clear he was completely in love. For that, it makes me believe that Turner may honestly be considering something new to his scheme, which I would welcome with open arms. 

Finally, you have Ron Rivera's comments during his presser, where he mentions Moore will see the F-slot and the occasional Z. Seems like a change in philosophy in all honesty.

So, what are your thoughts?

Three thoughts.

  • Turner is good at identifying receiver talent.
  • Cam is unlike any QB he's ever worked with.
  • Coryell requires a legitimate short yardage threat to keep the safeties from cheating deep.  Typically that's a power running game, but it doesn't have to be.

Whats the difference between a power run game, and just a run game if its still getting 5 yards a pop regardless?  Is it just a coincidence that Norv has had big backs?

 

I mean, if it gets the safteys to cheap up, then it gets the safteys to cheat up...

 

dont see why it has to be a big guy

Power run game refers to the blocking scheme not necessarily the size of the runner.

It would be foolish to try to put a square peg in a round hole.

Norv has his scheme, which is the basis for our offense from the days of Chud.  Who know what's going to happen with the running game because this isn't Shula's running game anymore.  I'm not sure how much of that we will retain (like is the playbook Shula's or the Panthers?) versus what will be brand new.

Maybe Norv's year off from coaching has allowed him to broaden his own play-calling horizons.  I am pretty sure Norv is smart enough to reflect on what works and doesn't work, hence his very long coaching career.  So I would think that he's going to modify his system to incorporate more spread and read option concepts, but do a better job of planning and attacking defensive weaknesses (which seemed to be a weakness of Shula on a week to week basis).

I think it translates to fans want a big back.

Emmitt Smith wasn't big.

Tomlinson wasn't big.....same size as CAP

      agree to disagree you are entitled to that opinion even though I find the argument completely bizarre based on data. I could type out a long paragraph discussing those areas but what’s the point. I posted a screenshot that showed Bryce in a similar post snap situation with a free rusher in his face which resulted in a TD - that’s what happened on the play so I posted it.

      I've already addressed this notion in a previous reply. You are basing your assertion outside reality if you think Bryce would have not only been more successful but defeated the Patriots in place of Herbert. Bryce got blown off the field by that Patriots team with the highest paid OL in the league. We've seen Bryce with an OL that gave up 65 sacks and it resulted in the #1 pick. And that is not a defense of Herbert or arguing he is a great QB in any way. He has physical talent but he has been similar to Darnold early in his career in terms of his very up and down perfomances. However that does not change the fact that they have significantly less invested in the OL than the Panthers.

      I think Tepper has been setting the stage where pending there is no miracle he wipes it all clean.  Think you already have been told that with small things like Evero staying.  Bryce is the guy next year.  OC, DC, everything stays the same.  QB room largely the same.  Nothing would really matter there.  They basically get one more shot and it goes how the schedule paired with our 27th ranked O predictably most likely goes.  Everyone out the door together.  Bryce is a bridge tier QB.  I don’t see Dave surviving where he could be bridge QB here in reality.
