Why the Panthers offense didn't work (and how Norv Turner should fix it)

Panic

Everyone who pays attention on this site knows I wanted Ryan Kalil released to free up that cap space, but I really do hope he bounces back and gives us one last healthy year. Losing Norwell is going to be a big blow. I fully understand that we couldn't afford to keep him, but we lost our best offensive lineman when he walked. I just hope in the long run we don't look back and have to admit that we paid the wrong OG when we inked Turner instead of Norwell. I absolutely think that Turner has the higher ceiling, but right now Norwell is the better OG.

Im glad that I’m not the only one who was frustrated with Shula when it comes to letting Cam make calls before the snap

The pre snap adjustments Cam made in 2015 were the best part of that 15-1 season

I was honestly furious with Shula during the SB because it felt like Cam was back on a short leash like he was in 2014

If Shula and Ron let Cam free like they did all year we would still be celebrating that SB

good stuff. i do think he’s overstating the effect of losing Norwell, but he is going to be difficult to replace.

I don't think he's overstating it at all considering how bad M Kalil was last year, Ryan's injury history and Trai's down year but it's not to say that it can't be mitigated, and he does offer ways to do that. Lot of unknowns at the moment and I really hope that Norv is the upgrade may believe him to be.

I don't think that he's overstating Norwell either, but at the same time I believe he's undervaluing other members of the line.

DWill had the next best rating for blocking for CMC after Norwell with 4.0yds. Turner was hurt a good bit of last season and needed surgery. Both Kalils were also hurt (Ryan clearly, Matt I could've sworn they said was healthy last year?). With that in mind, our line CAN do better. As mentioned earlier, RKalil is one of the best at getting to the second level and we know he was hurt a huge chunk of last season.

“Let Cam Newton be Tom Brady”

THIS. RIGHT. HERE.

When Cam makes his own adjustments and commands the line of scrimmage, we get 2015 MVP Cam. When we tie him up, we get limited Cam.

Please. Let. Cam. Be. Cam. Norv.

It's a pretty strong condemnation of an OC (Shula) that our offense ALWAYS ran better when we picked up the pace in the two minute drill allowing for minimal OC involvement. We always looked better playing fast with Cam controlling the plays at the LOS.

It's really nice for an outside party to come into the film review with no bias and discover what most of us have been saying for years

This is a FANTASTIC and fascinating analysis.  So many great insights.  Here are the splits for CMC.  We've really got to find a solid replacement for Norwell.

Concerning about the numbers on the right... (Turner)

Was it injury, Ryan's prolonged absence or helping Williams?

Turner has to play up to his contract. He didn't last year. Like I said, I think Turner has the higher ceiling, but I really hope we aren't looking back in a few years realizing we re-signed the wrong OG.

Trai Turner was hurt last season with his knee. I’m not sure if he needed surgery or not but it happen after the New England game and Trai was never the same the rest of the season and he missed time. He also has being wearing a knee brace in OTA’s so that still concerns me. I think we need to have Moton really come into his own or this offensive line will be in trouble. I just can’t take another year of Cam getting crushed.

    • This 1000%.  Hey who wants to sign with the guy that couldn't even get his client the guaranteed contract of a 3rd round pick?  Lmao
    • I don't think it's any weird or unique clause, it's the offset language, same thing so many contract disputes are over. It just means that including it, if a player is cut and then signed by another team, the original team would be able to subtract how much they're getting paid by the new team from what they still owe him on their guaranteed money. For example, it's why Russell Wilson signed for the minimum last year with the Steelers as that was included in his Denver contract.  So if he signed with the Steelers for $1 million, he'd get $1 million less from the Broncos, if it was $2 million, he'd get $2 million less, basically he couldn't make any more money than he was already going to make, so you sign for the minimum to not take unnecessary cap room from your new team while giving extra cap room to your old one. The problem with trying to include it in rookie deals is that a team trying to include it, it says they think they don't really believe the player will make it 4 years with the team before they cut them.  And this usually comes up with one or two rookies in most seasons, the difference is it's usually handled much more quietly and not as public and ugly as this one. The other difference is that it's happening with the Bengals, which I believe I saw are one of the few (or only?) team that doesn't have protections for rookies in rookie and mini camps to be able to participate even if they haven't signed their contract yet.  The other teams have injury protections that allow them to still play, but the Bengals do not, which is also why this one is so public and ugly, as most the time this happens, the rookie is still participating in the rookie and subsequent mini camps, giving them more time to get the contract done before training camp when they'd then hold out.
