We should seriously think about trading Funchess for a competent Guard.

While Funchess is probably our best WR at the moment and he could play a big role in what we do this year it want really much matter if we can't keep Newton upright. With him going into his final year of his contract right now we need more line help than WR help with young WRs like Moore and Vets like Smith and Wright. Hopefully Hurney will notice this and swing a trade for a starting Guard this season. If not let's just watch rewinds of 2015 and forget we will be sitting at 6-10 this year with more than likely a injured Newton.

Naaaaaah, man. I'm looking forward to our group this year. We can find a guard easier than an X receiver.

I just don't believe in developing young players, seeing them coming to fruition before our very eyes and jettisoning them before reaching the finish line (particularly out of perceived desperation).

Maybe a tackle but definitely not for a guard.

No one would make that trade for a Tackle.

Hell no.

And what good guard is being traded for Funchess anyway?

That's the bigger question but we could actually get a starting Guard for him. Cam Newton has multiple weapons this year besides Funchess who will likely be gone via FA next year.

Lock thread. You want a repeat of 2014? Can't trade the only wr Cam has chemistry with.

Olsen? McCaffrey? Byrd? Besides the fact we have Smith, Wright, Thomas and Samuel coming back at some point.

Like who?

It’s easy to say what we could get without naming the player, but who are we gonna get for him?  Keep in mind we’d have to be able to afford them as well.  So now it’s a matter of finding a guard who is:

A) Good

B) Good enough to make it worth trading Funchess

C) Afforadable

D) Who a team is willing to trade

I would be shocked if there’s a guard out there who fits all those checkpoints.

    • When they measure velocity they base it on an average of 3 throws, I think, could be 5. Each qb decides how he throws it. It's not taken from passes in a game. So basing on an "eye test" takes out bias. It's measured by a radar gun in a controlled environment.
    • I think the long term is when this stuff pays off. You have to set it all up and get all the big dogs on the same page.  So if you have the right guy set it up, assigning all the values, you are ahead of the game and he seems to be the top guy. Figures Tepper would be attracted to having the Top analytics guy. Okay with me I guess. If they get to the point where I am mad they didn’t kick or go for it, it means they are doing okay. Cause I haven’t thought that mattered much for several years.
    • Velocity MPH. Okay, that’s a number in isolation. what if CJ has a nice 85% effort motion that does what he is looking for? And Young has to step into things to get even 2 mph behind him?  I don’t KNOW that about either it is just an example of numbers don’t always tell all, but when I look at Young throw it reminds me of someone like Fran Tarkenton. A throwback non athletic weak armed scrambler for those of you who don’t remember. Had a great career in the old smaller slower but much meaner NFL. Would not today, IMO.  I think the arm strength questions, are plenty fair. And the eyeball test, it does mean something. Who would take Bryce Young over CJ Stroud or Richardson based on his arm? It is obvious to the naked eye where they stack up.
